I hope someone can help with the proper nose color..

Hi gang!

I’m working on a P-51 Mustang for my dad who will be visiting me next week. I’m trying to finish up a P-51 with the markings for “Deviless 3rd”, the plane on the bottom flown by Maj. Nevin (Niven??) Cranfill. I’ve got the Cutting Edge decals for them but they do not provide any indication of the proper color to use on the nose. The anti-glare panel is the usual Olive Drab but they sure made the nose flash look different; more like Interior Green. Can anyone out there in FSM-land help me out? Would this color on the nose seem out of the ordinary? I just had a rare thought. I know some units also used English colors if they happened to have some around. Could this have been used and what English color would be close to Interior Green? Or am I just way off base on all my guesses?

Thank you!

Eric

Hey Eric,

Here’s a sample from an aeromaster decal sheet which depicts deviless 3rd with a green nose.

The nose is green…a type of interior color green…

Hope this helps

The FS could be 14187 light green, willow green. I believe that is the color on the top Mustang on Tank’s post. My charts are at home, where I’m not. Or FS 34102.

You might want to just custom mix it with some white to save some time…

Is your Dad a real stickler for accuracy? If not, find something close, paint it, and be done with it. My guess is your Dad will be more impressed that you made it for him than worrying about the green on the nose being a shade or two off.

Eagle,

Ya know what…that was the one avenue I hadn’t thought of. LOL! Watch. I’ll give it to him, a tear in my eye, saying “Here Dad. I did this just for you.” He gingerly takes if from my hand and says “Oh son! It’s the most beutiful thi…hey wait a minute! What’s this inaccuarte color on the nose???” At which point he smashes it down to the ground, crushes it under his boot, then backs the truck over if. Ha-ha-ha!
