Just curious, why doesn’t Vallejo thin their paints for airbrushing instead of the consumer experimenting with thinning mixtures? Seems like a win-win
Because there is no one magic thinning ratio that will work 100% of the time guaranteed. It can vary by paint chemical composition, humidity, line air pressure, the model of airbrush….the only way to learn airbrushing effectively is trial and error. You can’t just pick it up and expect professional results immediately. It just doesn’t work that way.
If Paint begins to smoke, seek shelter and cover head.

You might want to take a look at this video. He has invested some time and effort into developing a mix that works well for him and documenting his results. I have mixed up a bottle of his thinner but have not tried it yet. Lots of life getting in the way lately.
I am going to attempt embedding the video but it’s my first time back to the forum since the connection difficulties of the past. Also new to iPads so this may take awhile for the few geriatric neurons that I have left to figure out lol
By the way congratulations to all who have poured effort into reviving the forum. The results are impressive and I am sure it was (is) no small task)
Well I never succeeded imbedding the video but here’s a link
I’ve tried this mix but get on better using the paint unthinned apart from a couple of drops of Vallejo Flow Improver at 28psi through an Iwata Eclipse with a 0.5 needle.
See below:
The trick of blowing air only between passes is good too.
It takes a giant leap of faith to say Vallejo needs no primer. Just do a tape pull test and a scratch test or two and it will be obvious the difference between primed and bare plastic. Ya, it might spray to the bare plastic but not chipping or flaking is another matter.
Must admit I use Mr Surfacer under Vallejo Model Air, not tried it on bare plastic. I have started using a dehydrator to accelerate drying, 10-15minutes at 40C (105F) works well.
Yes Vallejo responds well to heat setting. Some folks complain about a kind of rubber like feel to the surface, and tape pulling when un-masking after a second color was applied. A few of us here at the forum noticed we weren’t having that issue, but that we also dehydrated around 105-108F, myself for 30 minutes. Some others for an hour or two.
Edit: Wrong topic I replied to, so deleted text
But “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” says that Windex is good for EVERYTHING
I dunno, I think you have to use the spray bottle to make it work.
I have never had problems with Vallejo paint. And I airbrush the regular paint. I don’t buy the airbrush paints.
I don’t measure anything. I put some paint in a mixing cup. Then I add roughly equal parts thinner and flow improver. Oh, I use Green Stuff World thinner and flow improver because I have those paints too. So I just use their stuff on both paints.
I put paint in the cup, then add the thinner and flow improver in equal parts.I stir it until it runs off my stir stick leaving a little residue behind. Then I spray away. No clogs or anything.
