went to my local shop last night to simply pick up some paint, metallizer to be exact. I tried to stay away from the model shelf. Oh no, there it was. I have been wanting it for so long. There it was in all its original packaging, boxart the whole enchillada. It was also 5 bucks off. So, assuming I might not be able to find it again, for a while, I brought it home and gave it a nice warm place to live. Yes, I bought the 1:48 Slow but deadly Dauntless, 1:48 by accurate in the original box, not the white boxes they are offering now. I opened it up and it looks good but more importantly, as much as I hate the directions in these kits, the detail looks fabulous. Also, the color picture on the bottom of the box and inside the box is priceless. It is a finished model, the way all companies should do it. Give you something to shoot for.
I built the Hasegawa version about 6 months ago and it needed a partner next to the 5 corsairs on the shelf. It was crying for a partner, a wingman so to speak.
Anyway, anybody build this and what did you think?
Which version do you have?? AM does the -1, the -3, and the -5. I have built the -5 and loved every minute of doing it…well—except trying to fit all the cockpit detail together into the fuselage…was a very tight fit! I am about to start the -1 for the Marine group build. The SBD is my most favorite plane from WWII…at some point, I’ll break down and get the -3…probably when they retool it. Enjoy your build-- I sure did! AM had a walk-through for the SBD-1 build at their site you might want to check out as well…may help with whatever variant you are trying to build.
Oh you said it, cockpit fit and accurate. That is why I have 3 avengers, one in pieces, one partially built back in the box, and one unopened. I can’t stand the fit after the interior is done. I can’t get the fuselages together. I guess everyone has their modeling Achilles heal. Unfortuantly, the avenger is one of my all time favorite planes. But, I can’t get the damned things built!!! That is why I am patiently waiting for a 1:32 by trumpeter, maybe it will be easier.
