Hurricane Watch

The Hurri is nearing completion, so here are a few pics.

I applied the washes today, enamel over Future. I don’t use a generic color for this. I mix each of the colors with black, which means there are seven washes here, in distinct areas. The underside Sky, topside Brown and Green, nose Blue, fuselage code Gray, and roundel Blue and Red. Once dry, I sprayed Testor’s Dullcote and removed the masks. The canopy is dryfitted, just for looks.
Next, I’ll be preparing the wheel wells, flaps, landing gear and covers for Alcad. I hope to be done by Monday or Tuesday.

Awesome Pix, man you make it look easy!!! I’ve never done enamel wahes before, how do you remove the excess?? q-tip damp with pure thinner?

Thanks woodbeck !
Doing the washes that way is a lot more involved, but I really like the results. I mix them on the thick side so they don’t travel into an adjacent area by mistake. I apply it with a #000 brush, touching the panel line every 1/4-1/2 inch. The thicker the wash, the less time there is to remove it. I usually clean it after I’ve done the last line in that color. Cleanup is done with a #000 brush, dipped in thinner and patted on a paper towel to remove most of it. You want it damp, not wet. I run it along either side of the line, and around rivets. When it stops removing the wash and just moves it around, I touch the brush to the paper towel. This removes the paint, and I can usually resume cleaning up the more delicate areas with this drier brush. Once all those lines have been cleaned up, I move on to the next color, applying the wash and removing it.
Since there is a narrow window in which the wash can be removed, it teaches you to be careful applying the wash. The more careful you are applying it, the less cleanup is involved. You can’t slop it on like acrylic washes, but it’s more controlled and, to my eye, more effective.

Another fantastic build, Pix. Congratulations on a job very well done. May my models ever be so good. [alien]

Hiya Bill,
SWEET… Man she is really turning out to be a fine lookin Hurri. The wash is just right my friend.
Cant wait to see her finished in all her glory.
Flaps up, Mike

Looking really good Pix. I like how you do your washes, I might have to give that a go next time. Thanks for the tip and the pics.

looking good! just curious, you said you used different colors for the different parts on the plane… what color did you use for the sky underside?

Sharper than ever, Pix!
Looking fantastic!

Another great looking bird Pix. Truly beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Regards, Rick

Outstanding job! It’s amazing what a nice wash can do. Can’t wait to see the finished product!

Mark

Thank you yardbird, Butz, pingtang, tho, Brian, Rick, and Mark !

yardbird - not quite done yet. Monday or Tuesday is my target date.

pingtang - you have to make sure that you have enough Future (or Austrailian equivalent) between the wash and the underlying paint. I use MM airbrush thinner to mix and clean the wash. I never tried it with generic thinner, so I don’t know the results for that. Of course, try this ONLY on something you can afford to lose until you get used to the amount of thinner you need for the wash and cleanup.

tho - all of those seven colors were mixed with black until they reached a shade that matched the shadows I see on the model. I’m trying to replicate shadows, rather than dirt or rust.

Thanks again !

Bill,

Awesome job. I’m not sure why we don’t see more hurricanes on ths forum - they’re such a neat subject.

Did you name her ?
