Hurricane Ike

Hello All,

Wanted to drop a line and ask that you all keep us residents who were affected by Ike in your prayers. My home made if through with minor damage. But several of my neighbors had trees fall on their homes. We are still without power and have had to throw away much of our food in the fridge. We are staying with some friends until we can get power back. I will be back to building once my family and I are back to normal. Will keep you guys updated.

P.S. I got the OK from the missis to buy a generator once the gouging has stopped. Hopefully we will not need it anytime soon.

Glad to hear you made it through Ike with relatively minor damage. I was actually thinking about all those affected by this storm this afternoon. Hopefully, things are beginning to settle down and everyone can (hopefully) begin the rebuild. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

We made it through okay, with power not being out too long and not too big a clean up. Lost some shingles from the roof and that was it.

A happy by-product has been unexpected time off from work and time at the work bench.

Glad to here you are both OK. I have family in Napolianville, La. But I havent heard from them yet. They did have damage from the last storm 2 wks ago. I hear some areas arnt alowed back for several weeks! Any way, glad to hear your safe…Harv

[#ditto] Yes glad you guys fine. To bad about the Hurricane ruined some houses, The victims are in my thoughts and prayers as well.

happy you’re hanging in…still a few friends missing…but I’m sure we’re all pulling for you folks.

Glad to hear you’re OK. Lets hope to hear from our other Texans soon.

Glad to learn that you two are okay. I hope others fared as well as you did. Our prayers are with all of you.

I offer my best wishes to you and all the victims of the hurricane. I hope things return to normal very soon.

Hang in there all you folks incurring Ike’s wrath. We are thinking of you and praying for the best possible outcomes.

Hi Everyone!

My family and I made it safely through the storm. The house is OK except for a minor roof leak. No tree damage, no flooding, the only casualty was the 8 ft double sided wooden fence along the driveway. During the night, the storm blew 30 ft of it down, with a large section landing right on top my truck! Fearing the worst, I was surprised to find only a small dent on the driver’s side of the cab where the fence came to rest! Hardly any scratches and no broken windows, amazing! [tup]

The Power was turned on last night! I feel very fortuneate, 75% of the greater Houston area is still in the dark… On Saturday after the storm passed 95% of the Metro area was without power. With almost 4.5 million people in Greater Houston/Galveston it will take a long while to get everyone’s power on…

This is my second Hurricane experience in Houston. I went through Alicia in 1983.

Hopefully, we will hear from more people as they get their power and Internet back online!

Congrats on the minor damage. I know that sounds cryptic, but as a Katrina survivor,I learned to appreciate the small favors. Ya gotta wonder which wizard thought that naming a monster storm after a five star general was a bright idea… Good luck with the recovery.

We too made it all right. Although we are’nt near the coast, The center of Ike passed 30 miles to our East. We had some winds to 40 with a few gusts to 63mph. My neighbor lost a 200 year old Oak tree and three one hundred year old Pecans that were planted by his Grandfather. Rain wise we only got about 5 inches. We can thank God for the cold front that suddenly decided to move across the area after stalling out to our NW. We were forecast to be on the East side of the storm and I figure that the damage here would’ve been worse if it had.

While on the subject.

I know it’s probably a bit early, But has anybody gotten word yet to the fate of the Lone Star Flight Museum?? I’ve been following their rebuild of the PB4Y Privateer closely and it would be a shame if it was destroyed when it was so close to completion. I’ve heard that the main display hangar was flattened during the storm and that the destruction was absolute.

According to the Lone Star Flight Museum website the damage is extensive. They will be posting pictures of the damage on their website in the next few days. Some of the aircraft were able to be flown out prior to the storm. They listed what aircraft were saved, but it’s a very short list…They did fly out the B-17 "Thunderbird" and the B-25 restored to represent a Doolittle Raider.

I assume whatever didn’t get smashed up by the Hurricane’s winds, was completely flooded and ruined by the huge storm surge.

Update: The Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston, has some pics of the storm damage on their website. The buildings are all STILL STANDING!!! They did receive 8 ft of water in the buldings, and it looks like and awful mess in there…All of the aircraft received major water damage, but they are intact! It’s going to be alot of work, but they are planning on coming back! [tup]

Glad to hear you are all ok down there. We had winds from Ike here in SE Indiana sunday at 75+mph nothing like you went through but still enough to be scarry. I hope you can get back to normal soon. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Just got off the phone with a friend who works for the NWS. I was told that “there are several areas of interest out in the Atlantic and that we should probably not let our guard down just yet”. We’re only just past the halfway point of Hurricane Season (which was 9-10) and that we can probably expect 1 or 2 major hurricanes and another 5 or 6 named storms. I noticed on the weather blog yesterday that they had mentioned the same thing. For those that don’t have it or don’t know about it, this is the site where I get all of my weather from www.wunderground.com Just type your zip code in the search bar where it says city, state or zip code and hit enter. It works pretty good. The scientific forecaster at the bottom of the detailed 7 day (the one that runs vertically) has the actual NWS forecast for your area but it usually has a lot of their acronyms and terminology in it, but is still worth reading.

UPDATE

We are still without power at home. Our part of town is 70% without power compared to 100% yesterday. We have been staying at my stepdaughters boyfriends place. Turns out he Loves movies, comics and action figures. And he is my age (early thirties) I even helped him fix is Jaws dinorama which fell off his shelf due to the storm with my plastic welder. He was soooooo excited about that. My fiance and her daughter just roll their eyes when we talk about our toys. We have been fortunate, but please keep everyone in your prayers. I will post pics soon.

Talk to you guys soon.

PS - Glad to hear the flight museum is still their. Hope they are back up and running soon.

This has pictures of the Lone Star Flight Museum in the aftermath of Ike. The pics speak for themselves. I had the opportunity to visit the museum last year. This is a great loss to Texas Modelers

The other “flyable” B-17 here in Houston is OK following Hurricane Ike. (I don’t know why we are lucky to have 2 of these rare aircraft, but I am glad they both survived the storm) The B-17 “Texas Raider” from the Gulf Coast Wing of the CAF, is undergoing extensive maintenance at Houston’s Hobby Airport.

The hanger received some minor damage, but the aircraft is fine. [:)]
