I have two kits that I may potentially build for this; a Trumpeter Sturer Emil or an old Monogram StuG IV that was partially started. Both kits are 1/72 scale. If I get especially motivated and time permitting, I may build them both.
Edit: I’ll build the ex-Esci Italeri Panzerjager I in 1/72 scale.
Hi, My Uncle Bill was in a tank destroyer and won a silver star for his actions at the “Bridge at Remagen” I already was planning on doing an M 10 next year. So, I’ll enlist.[8-|]
Which is the better scale for this? I see Tamiya has both 1/48 scale and 1/35 scale.
My scale of choice would be 1/35, as with all of my armor models.
I don’t know anything about the 1/48 Tamiya kit, but the 1/35 version is a decent kit if you want a quick and easy build with a convincing end result. It’s not that detailed though… If you don’t mind quite a bit of extra work resulting in a more detailed model, I’d recommend you have a look at the AFV-Club kit. It includes a very detailed turret and hull interior as well…
Tamiya’s 1/35 scale M10 is a horrible, ancient kit originally designed as a motorized toy. More recent kits by Academy and AFV Club are vastly superior to the 40 yr old Tamiya kit.
Tamiya’s 1/48 scale M10 is a great little kit, but suffers from their diecast metal lower hull. Not too much of an issue, just annoying.
The AFV club M-10 leaves me in sticker shock, I agree that if you want a decent kit, You should pay a little more, but the AFV club kits are way out of my league and I dare to say they would be out most peoples price range. I’ll do some more investigating. Please keep me signed up. but I’ll let you know what I’m going do.
sry im new to this forum thing and I haven’t learnd how to load more than 1 pic at a time with photobucket so here is my other build if it fits in with the GB
I don’t understand why the prices on AFV Club web site are so much more. I did some more research and found others are selling these kits at a big discount. Why?
Any how, I still want to do the M 10, it will be 1:35 scale AFV Club. Any change of plans will be posted here as they happen.
A quick eBay search turned up an AFV Club M10 for $18 and an Academy M10 for $15.
AFV Cub’s kit has some annoying gimmicks like a spring loaded recoil system and vinyl rubber inserts for the suspension bogies. Academy’s kit has better interior details within the hull, but experts say the AFV turret is more accurate. Purists recommend the AFV turret on the Academy hull; something I’d never bother to do! I have both kits and would recommend either, but tell you to get which ever kit you find cheaper.
Having said all that, there’s probably more aftermarket items designed for the more common Academy kit than for the less common AFV Club kit. That’s something to keep in mind. The Academy kit has been released in at least three versions as has the AFV kit.
Thanks Rob, This will be my first armored kit. I’m doing the Trumpeteer 1:35 Half track from The Dirty Dozen movie, so i guess it gave me some experience with the tracks, other than that, it can’t really be called armor.
I recently purchased the Academy P-38 Kit to do for the “Longest Day” GB. and so far (no it’s not finished yet) Its been an extremely pleasing kit (but it does have the odd peices that don’t fit true, However, they were fixed without much trouble and the P 38 is a tough one to do.). So, maybe I’ll go with the Academy M 10. But That’s in the not too far forseeable future.
So, Thanks again Rob. and to everyone else as well
SS: that’s NOT a Ausf.G - it’s a StuG IV…count the wheels - there’s 8, plus it has the forward driver’s position. But, it still qualifies for the build![snYea]
Greg: Oops, my bad…[:$] Thanks for clarifying. Note to myself: Next time do NOT only look at the top of the vehicle…
PJ: Nice to have you in here! I’m building the same kit, but I have to save mine first. I started working on it some time ago, but it was way above my skill level at that time, so some of the assemblies I completed back then just look horrible. I hope all the guys here can help me with that project…
Thanks dude for having me here, I just finished the Dora so sneak over there and give it a gander. The Eduard Hetzer is a sweet looking kit with tons of detail. Just holler at me if you need help.
