Huh?

[:S]

Is that a “paper panzer”? Looks like a 105mm howitzer on a Panzer 38(t) chassis. I never followed proposed WWII German artillery pieces, but could this be a model that never reached production like the 88mm SP “Grille”? [:^)]

VERY cool!

I’ve been waiting for some Waffentragers to come out!

Basically, it means “Weapons carrier”< and there were all sorts of them–ALAN has a rare one out there that I’ve got, but this is most welcomed. The coolest one was the huge 88mm one–it loos like a Mobelwagen on some serious steroids.

So that was a production SP artillery piece? Never seen one in photos. [:|]

Here’s a partial list of ones that were made:

leichter Waffenträger (Leichte Einheits-Waffenträger) 88mm Pak 43 L/71 (Ardelt I),

leichter Waffenträger 105mm leFH 18/40 L/28 (Ardelt I),

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe I (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 37mm Flak,

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe I (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 75mm PaK 40 L/48,

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe I (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 75mm StuK 42 L/70,

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe I (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 105mm leFH 18/40/5 L/28 (Ardelt II),

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe II (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 88mm Pak 43 L/71 (Ardelt II),

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe II (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 100mm K18,

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe II (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 128mm K18/3 / K43 L/55 (Ardelt II),

mittlerer Waffenträger Größe II (Mittlere Einheits-Waffenträger) 150mm sFH 18/6 L/29.5 (Ardelt II)

Pics of them are pretty hard to come by. They were mostly experimental or one-offs. Aberdeen used to have one–the one that ALAN made. I’ve never actually seen this particular one, but it’ll be a fun build. God knows I don’t need any more models, but I’ll tank one, please!

Hmm! Learned something today. Thanks.

should be picking up two of these on saturday. I think that this vehicle was built (Prototype) and a photo of it is in the encyclopedia of German tanks and armoured vehicles, not 100% but its super cool, btw it works out about €30 which looking at the kit on trumpeters site looks a bargain… well I think so any way.

Terry.

None of the Waffentrager designs ever entered full production or saw combat but some did get off the drawing boards and built as prototypes which were captured at war’s end. They do provide some pretty interesting designs and insight into where the Germans were headed with SPG artillery concepts…especially for some of their super-heavy artillery pieces.

As I thought.

Actually, one Wafentrager is shown on a Berlin street at the end of the war, April 29, 1945.

It seems they were throwing in everything they had? This one looks like an 88mm PaK43?

This is the ALAN model one.

hummm… like the 88mm one !

Doog,

Cool pic, and proof once again that it’s virtually impossible to say “never” and “always” when speaking broadly about German armor. Battle of Berlin situation is a unique/different set as it was hardly planned and there were many bizarre circumstances there and when I said “didn’t see combat” I was referring to planned/organized deployment ala the Dicker Max or other similar circumstances where prototype designs did see field trials/combat.

As an aside, one of my favorite accounts/stories about the Battle of Berlin is around how many different types of infantry rifles were being distributed from captured stocks (French, Italian, Russian, Czech, etc.) to the defenders but none of the available small arms ammo matched! [proplr] It’s amazing when you read the accounts of how the battle unfolded that it actually lasted as long as it did considering how poorly armed/organized/planned the defenses actually were. Berlin and the surrounding suburbs were home to large portions of the German war industry and proving grounds so many strange/wierd things pop up in those final days photos as a result (like the famous Pz I with a StuG III StuK 40 mounted on it!).

Trumpeter seems to have found a comfortable niche that DML isn’t willing to go head-to-head with them on when it comes to paper panzers/prototype designs. I too would love to see that 88 design available in styrene!
