I’m new here, but I’m not new to modeling . I’ve been building kits since 1970. Back then the hobby was king! You could find just about every thing you wanted in a model kit to build and stick on your shelf.
From Dracula and Frankenstein’s bride to Big Daddy Don Roth’s “Rat Fink” hot rods to ships and aircraft of all types and sizes readily available at any department store, anywhere.
Current projects include:
1:48 Monogram B-24 D
1:24 “The Project Car” dynorama involving a 1967 “Rustang” not-so-fastback.
Future projects in the queue:
1:48 Lockheed XB-38 (based on a Revell B-17 F kit)
1932 Ford Coupe “barn find”
Looking for a REAL hobby shop in the North Houston area and maybe even a local club to join.
Welcome and I find today you can even go to a hobby store, if you can find one, and not find what you are looking for. RC seems to be the king these days.
Here are a couple of quicky builds I have completed recently just to break things up a bit. Meng Kids series has a few “egg” style versins of the WWII “heavies” They make a B-17G, B-24J, Arvo Lancaster, to name a few.
The B-17 is kitted after the recently departed “Nine-o-Nine” but I had to try a different ship - “Fuddy-Duddy” just to see what it would look like in foil. I was very impressed with the quality of these kits given they were snap-tites and retailed for $13 USD.
Nicley done, you shoudl post this in the aircraft section. I should really get some of tehse egg planes just for a bit of fun, nice to see one in Rattlesden markings.
I only know of one local shop, located at 2029 Southwest Freeway, Greenbriar Dr. @ Shepherd Dr. I’ve never been as that is a bit of a haul when I just need a bottle of paint or eight, but their web site gives the impression of quite a nice shop.
I found the place I was looking for! G&G Hobbies! It’s a family owned hobby shop that’s been around since 1945. They have had to change location recently, couple years ago I think, they used to be in the historic “Rice Village” area but have moved here:
2029 Southwest Fwy, Houston, TX 77098
Awesome little shop, huge selection of materials for scratch building, great selection of models and lots & lots of RR stuff! Oh and the staff are very friendly and knowlegable.
I found a rare kit I had been looking for for years at a very reasonable price.
Howdy and welcome saddle pal… My son lives in Houston and just loves it there. I like your introduction message as I remember those times very well too. Looking at whats on your table tells me you are not just one style/theme of kit builder.
Its nice to have another member in the group, glad to have you here.
Thanks all y’all for the warm welcome! The ol’ workbench will be uncharacteristicly idle this holiday as we’re taking a road trip out to South Carolina for Christmas.
I wish y’all a very merry Christmas and a happy Holiday!
