You give a bunch of young guys access to powerful weapons, explosives, and flamible stuff and crazy stuff happens. I remember a couple of guys told to “get rid of” a box of “willie pete” grenades. The SGT meant that it should be put away, or out of the way. Well, the young men took it to the shore and started shooting the grenades at jelly fish, or anything else that moved. The rest of the camp thought it was under fire and all heck broke out for several minutes. I wonder how much amunition was wasted? The base XO and I had an interesting conversation afterwards. I can remember a claymore mine being set off and barely opening the case. It seems someone used most of the C-4 (explosive materials) to cook with! Stuff happens. I have kept thing “clean” because this is a family forum.
Note the “E” for excellence award on the toilet. There are things that I saw happen that if I had not seen them with my own eyes, and had others see the same thing, I would not ever believe the things were possible. I bet the toilet bomb was a real morale booster. At the time that happened those carrier deck and flight crews were working 18 hour days. The loss of aircraft and crew was also staggering. A little stress relief was in order.
Friday, December 7th, is a day to reflect and remember.
