How to keep tires from deteriorating

Gentlemen,

I have noticed on the models that come with soft tires (I’m not sure if these tires are made out of rubber or vinyl) that they deteriorate after few years.

Someone in the Techniques forum aleady told me that a periodic coat of WD40 would do the job, keeping the tires from drying.

I was wondering if a spray of Testors Dullcote on the tires would to the job of sealing the rubber, keeping the rubber from contacting the air, thus keeping the moisture inside, and so avoiding deterioration. What do you think?

Also, please let me know how do you cope with the problem.

I am the WD-40 suggestor, and it works well. The Dulcote actually speeds up the drying-out processs because of chemiclas and compounds in the Dulcote. It is best just to leave them untreated and give them that WD-40 TLC every once in a while.

Nope, fades away to a dull appearance when it dries.

Over what period of time are we talking about. I don’t remember any tires falling apart on the cars I built as a kid and they were around 5+ years. Or is it just newer kits?

I use Future floor polish it makes the tires shine.
