Hi Guys, i just got back from town and i got myself the airfix RAF recovery set in 1/72nd scale. or those of you who don’t know this kit it is quite an early effort of theirs but from what i remember from building it as a kit it goes together reasonably well, it contains a bedford truck with a “queen mary” trailer and a thornycroft truck with a coles crane on the back, plus two motorcycles with riders.
Heres the question - when i first did this kit it was a case of building the lot than daubing it with paint - quite a lot of it too - i was about seven years old so it didn’t last too long either. this time i’m gonna do it right so what is the best way of painting these little trucks?. are we talking paint the interior, build then paint the outside or do each piece individualy?
planes are easy, this looks damnably fiddley
slightly off the subject, i already have got this kit in my stash, the one i have is the original issue with the red star on the box with the word NEW on. for some reason i couldnt bring myself to even open this one that i bought very many years ago so i went and bought another, anyone else ever do this?

i will leave the field ope to our Braille Scale crew,
but i think you want to build & paint, or paint & build the interior first,
then do the rest around it, kind of like the cockpit of an airplane build.
that is what i am doing on my 1/35 Quad.
usually armor or vehicle stuff is painted mostly assembled.
on the topic of buying a kit that you already have because you don’t want to open the first one:
not me personally, but i think you will see that most forms of
modeling madness manifest themselves here.

Not being familiar with this model group, I’m not sure exactly what to tell you. But I do almost all my stuff in pieces then put it together. Make sure you post some pics. I’m sure we’d all love to see them!

re: construction tip, i think wildwilliam is correct… i like to paint all the small stuff while it’s still on the sprues, touch-up paint after removal & clean-up of sprue attachment points, then assemble…
re: buying 2nd kit, it’s not because i don’t want 2 open the first one, it’s usually because i either lost a crucial part or need spares of something… in 1/72, it’s often less expensive 2 buy another kit than 2 source AM parts, like when i needed spare
roadwheels 4 my M32 conversion.

Hi Ed, Bill and Frosty. thanks for the info. i really appreciate it. paint/build/paint is the way i’ll go on this, cheers. the main reason for not building the original one is because i’ve had it for about 30 years now (i bought it shortly after the first one “bought it” i must have been about 8 years old at the time), i’m not bothered about building a rare kit, its just that i have have this one for years and have never even seen inside the box and the box is in mint condition. i may buil it some day, especially if i like the result of the build on the one i just bought. thanks for the welcome to the dark side.

I wouldn’t be building it either. If I could find a copy of rocket models my mother bought, built, painted, etc. when I was a kid, I don’t think I’d have the heart to do it.
