helloy folks, i just asking for your help. i am just a beginner in the world of plastic modelling. i have my model 1 year ago. is it right to paint first the wing before it glue to the upper and lower fuselage or just attach it first before in painted?
This will bring forth a lot of opinion and discussion. I for one build then paint. There are others who paint then assemble. You just need to find which method works best your you.
Areas that are impossible to reach after assembly, one should paint those areas before assembly if they are going to be visible afterwards. Such and the areas of the swing wing that are sandwiched between the fuselage sections.

I seem to recall someone mentioning a method for modifying the wing fold mechanism so you can easily install the wing after painting. You’ll have to read a bit though.
thanks a lot to your great advice and suggestion.[bow]
but from now, i already started building my 1:48 mirage III cj from hobbyboss. Maybe 1-2 years from now i will start to build my 1:48 f-14A bombcat from academy because i want first to get/gatheres some good ideas from all of you folks here.
i just finished 4 models since i started last year 2007. (maybe if i have a courage to post the picture of my 4 fiinished models coz its looks terrible.)[

thanks a lot again and God bless you all![angel]
Hey Brownskin,
good to hear that there are still some newcomer to this hobby. Don’t worry if your models look great or terrible, you are the judge! If you like your models, they are allright, no matter what someone else says! Just try to achieve your best results and if you are doing that everytime and you still have fun building models you are on the right way. Keep on improving your skills but most of all keep on having fun! And just to make sure, all of us have started the same way; I’m a modelbuilder since 40 years now and believe me sofar I have not seen a single modelbuilder, who’s first ever model was top class!
Refering to your original question: Do as you like it, there is no rule book which says you have to paint first and then assemble or vice versa. Just make sure, keep your patience and do not try to make 2 things at the same time, this will not work out in most cases pretty good!
Oh yes one last thing, the F-14 had NO folding wings, never! But I think what you are refering to are the socalled swing wings. Welcome to the world of nitpicking, welcome to the wonderful world of modelbuilding!
Keep on modeling
René
Paint the wings, no decals yet. Assemble the rest of the plane as per instructions with the painted wings. Cover any exposed parts of the wings with Tamiya yellow masking tape, it won’t leave any tape gunk behind when you pull it off later.
Brownskin,
Welcome to the FSM forum and good luck in building your models. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on this forum and someone is sure to answer any questions that you may have. Please do not hesitatel to ask.

Hi there Brownskin,
Firstly, [#welcome] to the gang lol.
There is no such thing as ‘terrible’, we all do as best we can and try harder for the next time, post some pics, not everyone is an awesome builder. There have been a few lately posting pics of their ‘first’ and have left me gobsmacked at how good they are, but it’s all about having fun YOUR way, the gang in here are great for advice and tips. I read listen and learn.
But mostly it’s all about having fun and doing something that makes YOU feel good.
Best of luck with the Mirage [tup]
All the best,
Mick C.
thanks mick…
