I try to melt sprues but the thickness varies. So I bought monofiliment thread .004 and it looks too thin. Any suggestions?

well in my findings 1-2lb fishing line (monofiliment) works well. im not sure how that is in comparison to what you were using.
I am not sure what the majority of antenna wire was, but lets say as a guess it is 60 mil. Dividing by 48 gives just over one mil, so the four mil is thicker than scale. The antenna wire would have to be nearly a quarter of an inch for your replica to be too thin.
However, the way the eye works, it is unlikely it can actually resolve thread that thin. The contrast/color goes a long way in giving an appearance of size. If that monofilament is the transparent stuff, it will look thinner than it really is.
In my opinion most antennas look too thick. The first paragraph explains why. So never use a high contrast color like black or white, use a medium gray. Now, since most antennas look to thick, I delight if I produce one that looks too thin. Folks like delicate, thin looking detail. The 4 mil monofilament is fine.
Lets face it, if you view a 1:72 or even most 1:48 scale subjects from a scale viewing distance equivalent to the distance you view your model at (and can still focus) you have a hard time seeing antenna wire.
