How many Mustangs does a guy need?

Pictured is my haul form Modelpalooza this past weekend. My wife may be regretting giving me her credit card on Saturday. I hope I live long enough to build some of these kits. Whew!

Ah, but you’re missing Monogram’s 2 1/48 scale offerings, the -B and -D. And the old Revell 1/48 -D (pre-merger) would round out the collection nicely!

Well let’s see.

A-36

P-51A

P-51B

P-51C

P-51D

P-51F

P-51G

P-51H

P-51J

P-51K (Mustang IV)

Looks like 10 to me

Don’t forget the twin…

And the F-51 and Cavaliers

And the F-6 Recce

Seems to me that the P-51F, P-51G, P-51H, P-51J are very similar aircraft. Googled each one. I have an Eduard Overtrees F-6D up in the closet. Coupla P-51A’s, an early F-6B (one on the shelf and one in the stash), Coupla F-51B/C’s and more than one P-51D/K. I do need the Accurate Miniatures P-51C with the tail fillet. If a vendor had a Modelsvit P-51H thhis weekend, I woulda snatched that up too. As for the F-82 Twin Mustang, I am anxiously waiting for Modelsvit to release the kit. I just wish the kit would be an early P-82B Twin Mustang so I can build the Bettie Jo.

How many? I’d venture the same number as the entire 1944 production run. Especially if you factor in the multitude of air racers over the years.

The P-82 isn’t technically a Mustang even though the fuses look similar. I knew a guy that worked on them and he said that only a panel on the tail could be shared, everything else was a completly diffrent aircraft

Based on the number of decal sheets I have, I would say about 200…

Yeah. When Tom Reilly was building his P-82 prototype he said that there might be five parts common between the two types.

If you got the Tamiya “B” model from who I think you did, it should have decals for teh 5th interceptor squadron, the Spitten Kittens. Don’t laugh at the name, the squadron arrived in England but their aircraft never made it for some reason. Eventually the Brits noticed all these pilots just hanging around and donated Spitfires so they could fly. Eventually the name appeared and was kept until at least they got their F-15s.

If all you wanted was mustangs, I’ll take that X-wing off your hands for a certain paint project I need to do.

Then there is the original body style, 1964 1/2, and the bigger one from the late 60s and early 70s. We can forget about the Mustang II, but then there is the 80s with the 5 liter. The current retro version is nice also. I think at least 5 versions from Ford. [:D]

I knew someone would get there sometime[whstl]

I remember seeing the first mustang at the Ford pavilion at the 1964 Worlds Fair.

When my 1962 Mercury was smashed by a brand new Camaro the gfarage owner let me borrow his 1965 nustand fastback until he was done beplacing my bent axel.

We had aomeone in our class in our senior year show up with a pure white mustang. It had no markings of Ford or mustang and we had to guess what it was. Last seen in his front yard on blocks with tires removed and according to the police the only it was getting of the blocks was when it was sold. There was a history of tickets and chases with the last one involving four departments and a roadblock with two semi trucks.

I owned a 1973 mach 1 but sent it to the junk yard after it got striped in my driveway. The parts were way too expensive.

And then there are the Unlimited racing Mustangs.

I knew the Ford Mustang would show up in this thread at some point. My dad had a 1966 Mustang GT cconvertible, the first Mustang in our family. In 1976, he bought a Mustang II Ghia, which I inherited when he had to stop driving. The much maligned Pinto-based Mustang II was an important car because if Ford had not produced the car, we wouldn’t be driving the Mustangs we’re driving today. 1973 would have been the last year for the original “pony car.” Today I drive a red 2012 Mustang convertible, my second red Mustang convertible, the first was a '91 5 liter LX convertible. My dad’s '76 Ghia made it possible for me to own these cars. Now, let’s get back to airplanes.

How many? At least one more than whatever happens to be in the stash.

I have to agree.
