But I have been trying to thin the stash ever since I helped get rid of a deceased buddy’s enormous stash. It wasn’t fun, and some of it stayed at my place when we cleared out his storage locker. When the last box left the house, my sister told me that if I did this to her, she would find a way to kill me even though I would be dead!
Well, it’s Friday night. Might as well do a load of laundry, then crank up the A/C and try to reduce my stash!
^^^^ Whoa! I have 63 unbuilt, 2 on the shelf of doom and 3 in progress. I’m okay with the numbers. Birthdays and holidays rachet it up (love my wife). I have a personal policy of build 2, buy 1 but I struggle…
All aircraft. I think it’s a few too many as they don’t fit in the corner I have them stacked up in anymore. Now mind you that’s because I live in a cape cod style house, and the wall angles in about halfway up. I’m sure I can finish them all, but it might take a few years.
Only counting those that are unbuilt and unpainted, I think I have eighteen kits total (that’s counting the unbuilt P-47 in a Lindbergh 2 in 1 kit as one kit itself). Baby stash…[:)]
Very glad to say I only have 6 in my stash. That’s what I limit myself to because I just don’t see any reason to have 100’s of boxed models sitting around taking up space.
A reason I have so many is that I have been building models for over 50 years. Back then, most of what I built was Tamiya. In the middle 1970s they had many that went out of production for years. I remeber some, like the T-34, which were gone for years, so I bought it when ever I saw one. It is one of many. Companies still do that, and the way I build is just on impulse. There are a lot of Dragon kits that I have, that you don’t see any more. Sometimes back then they were on sale. My job had me driving from city to city and I would stop at the LHS all the time. And there used to a lot of therm. That was before the internet. And they were inexpensive. Not priced like they are now. It’s hard to buy kits for $60 any more. The hobby in some ways, is a lot different. There was a time back in the the mid 1970’s when Tamiya tank models sold for $5.00.
For awhile I swear everytime I wanted to build something I found it was out of production- so I started stockpiling kits I wanted before they went out of print.
That and finding stuff on sale at a great price so I bought them assuming I’d buy them sometime in the future and never find such a good price again.
Don’t get in this mode, I’ll probably never build even half of them. Still I keep holding out that in retirement I’ll get to them. At least I can say that I’ve really slowed my purchases down though it’s still faster than I’m building.
How do you store them to find and access a kit and how do you make sure you don’t buy the same one again?
Some ideas: Store them by type. Planes in the top of the closet shelf, AFV’s on a shelving unit, Ships under the bed? Make an alphabetical list of what you have? How 'bout listing/arranging/ storing by scale or by Country?
Often I will want to check one of my kits for comparing against Photo’s of a newer release. For “Steel Warships” I’ve got 2 shelving units with things sorted by scale. ie: One shelf for 1/600 HMS, another for 1/700 IJN ships and sections for 1/600-1/700 DKM. This makes it easy to pull out a KGV or Scharnhorst to compare with the photos of the latest Meng or Flyhawk offereing. (Flyhawk’s new Scharnhorst blows away the old Tamiya kit.)
As far as having too many kits, having a model in the stash can feel quite rewarding. For me that is part of the hobby too. It is nice to be able to supply a friend with a gift from that stash and even more fun when the grandkids come over and get to pick something we can build together. No LHS near me in Philly. For my Grandkids I am the Hobby Shop.

Edit: My planes are in the top of the closet. Can’t get a photo there as my wife is napping. And, yeah, the big sailing ship kits are under the bed.
Thats pretty much my thinking, get them while i can. There are a few kits i would really like but just can’t get hold of.
And beshides, having a good size stash means plenty of choice without haveing to buy a kit in and also means i can plan out diorama’s and get the extra bits i need.
I have many open shelves in a whole house basement. They are organized by company and what it is. All for example, Dragon Models Tigers are together. All Tamiya, Bronco, Italeri, Dragon and others are together. I got the shelves from Home Depot or Lowes. I keep it very neat and organized. My wife leaves it to me. My workshop is in there as well. We do have a Pool Table and laundry there as well. Luckier than most. All the figures and other stuff is in pllastic storage containers. Hey, its my fun time! I re6aly llike my mass collection. It’s my own Hobby Shop.
