How many different versions of the Spitfire?

I’ve heard of the Mk.1&2&the9 but thats about it . So, how many?

I did an article in the February 2001 Fine Scale Modeler that deals with your question. It might be available still in back issue somewhere.
There were 22 different Marks of Spitfire and many sub variants within the Marks. There were 8 Marks of Seafire with sub variants within these too (not 47 as stated above).

Hi Sean / guys,
Spitfire development is a big subject and a fasinating one also, i’m keen on learning more myself…so with the last Spitfire as a Mk24 - that leaves two not counted ? i’d be keen to know as would Sean & gregers, i’m sure.
Seafire’s do total 8, as Mks 1, 2, 3, 15, 17, 45, 46 and 47 to make sense of both above replies.
Also its worth noting that often a Mk was released before its previous Mks as was the case with the 5 and 9, both hurried in to fend off German fighter aircraft and this meant development may be higher in earlier Mks - if that makes sense ! - (it did back in the 1940’s thankfully)[:)]

You have answered your own question. The two not counted for are Seafires, Mk XV and XVII. They fall into the same numbering sequence with the Spitfire Marks but are not Spitfires.
The Spifire has a very confusing history indeed.

Hey Bob! I am interested in the Mk. 9. I haven’t seen any kits of the Mk.9 though. Could you put me on the straight and narrow about that ?

What scale ?
In 1/48th scale the Mk IX is well done by Hasegawa and ICM.
