The grate on the rear deck of the Tiger (P) has large slots and nothing underneath. The temporarily inserted sanding stick illustrates how good the view is inside. What is normally done in this case? A blinking plate under the grate? Paint the interior black? Or build a little bit of a box, and then paint it black to give it a bit of depth?
MMMm… tricky my lad. My suggestion would be to scratchbuild an engine and pipework. Job done. [:D] Or alternatively you could spray the inside black or perhaps fashion a false bottom to go just below the grills and spray that black. What Tank is it? Have you any decent refs for it. Perhaps it did have a grill of some sort below the big slot holes.
Simple…install a resin engine! Those huge slat openings aren’t there for nothin’!!! Gotta keep the AM companies in business!!
hehe! JK wing_nut! If it were me I’d just blank it off, unless there really is something (other than an engine) just underneath. Maybe some grating or screen? Those grates look similar to the grates above the radiator fans on the production Tigers, but the Porsche version used some type of electric motor. Don’t know if it needed radiators.
Wing- I found this same problem when I built mine earlier this year and thought after the build that a black blanking plate would be the easiest solution… or you could throw some mechanicals in there for detail. Voyager’s PE set for that kit is awesome (and really involved) and has some really nice screens for that area that go along way in breaking up the view into the abyss beneath the grating. The void is still there, but it would be less noticeable with some anti-grenade screens.
Here’s how that Voyager stuff looks with paint and weathering thrown at it- the abyss isn’t as ugly as before. BTW these screens are really 2-piece deals per side- the screen itself and a very, very thin and delicate frame to attach to the screens! These sucked to assemble.
On a somewhat related note, what do you think of that kit thus far, WingNut? This linky tells of my experience with it… /forums/915593/ShowPost.aspx
Just ran acoss a similar scenario and I did as you speculated- built a “shallow box” to install below. I like that it’s not an “obvious” blanking plate and accomplishes the task at hand with some depth for illusion. In my experience if it’s standing off by 1/8th" or more and prepainted black the overspray usually isn’t noticeable unless you kind of “work” at getting the body color down in there? Now if I know what’s supposed to be down in there and it’s easily represented I might go a step further- like using scribed or ‘lap and board’ “specialty shapes” styrene. Drybrushed to highlite the ridges or such it also gives further illusion to something inside. But IMHO just about anything is better than a cavernous space down below a screen/opening which somehow becomes visible sooner or later?
Thanks all for the ideas. I was thinking the shallow box thing so I may go that route.
Dre, the kit is going together great. This one is the premium edition and the 1st 1 I did was a smart kit. Still not 100% sure what the diff. is as far as 1 kit going OOP and being replaced with a “smart kit”. I “get” most of what the deal is though. I dud notice there are a lot more edges that need to be cleaned up and mold lines to fix on grab handle and tow rings and the like.
The PE fret has the screens that you described. Folding them around the metal wire frames looks like it is going to be the highlight of my day.
Probably the biggest difference between a Premium and Smart kit is the amount of PE. I have the Premium Ferdinand and it’s loaded. The idea behind the Smart kit was to give better detailed plastic pieces in place of the PE so as to make the build easier. I have yet to get one yet, but will someday.
you could put in a spare eng from a car model glue some extra hoses and carbs on it (granted it is not the real thing) but as long as it looks BUSY in there
That thought ocurred to me too. I just happen to a Ford GT (my when I hit the lottery car) in the pile. I guess if I ever did actully build it I could glue the hood closed[:-^]
