I am finding that with 1/48 scale aircraft I am going to have a hard time finding a place to store them as they won’t fit very well in the glass case I have.
If I had built 1/72 scale exclusively then I would be alright for most models but aircraft like the A-10, P-61 and others in 1/48 are not going to fit. [banghead]
Maybe I will have to build something. [%-)]
Bookshelves are a good place if you’re a reader & have some in your house. Just weight the bottom tiers with books or other heavy stuff & then use the top part to display
models. That’s one place I use. I’m also lucky to have in my home a polished wooden
ledge that runs the entire circumference of the downstairs section of my house–several hundred feet of 6" walnut just begging for models to be displayed on it! Not ideal for most WWII planes, but great for armor, ships & jets. Also, I set up 3 wall mounted display shelves using metal brackets & stained & varnished pine boards. This is a relatively inexpensive arrangement that can accommodate about a dozen AC. It’s also
out of the way since it’s on a wall.
I was at an auction the other week where there was a bunch of big storm windows that nobody wanted and I got to thinking, what if I took the glass out of the frames and built some display cases, shouldn’t cost much eh? I have a huge basement where I store my models, but the dirt and dust from the floor joists are really taking a toll on my models. With 1/48 and 1/32, space is’nt a problem but protecting them from the elements is.
See if you can find a place in your hometown that does crafts and furniture. We have one and 2 Father’s Days ago, my wife went and gave the dimensions and they custom build a case with deep shelves that’s about 7 feet tall-- for substantially less $ than I would be able to get anywhere else…
My displayed models are in a 7’ long 3’6" deep by 4’ high, display cabinet that was out of an old hardware store, I managed to pickup for $20, couldn’t get the shelves at the time though.
well after my wife kept moaning i bought a new wall unit, i put my 1/48’s &72’s in one the old wall unit i have 2 1/32 spooks ( see picture below) a 72 vulcan and a 72 victor , but the 1/48 B-1B LANCER is upstairs in the bedroom , as she wont let me put it on the dining room table
Currently my builds are on the top three shelves of an open faced bookcase in the hobby room. Eventually I have plans drawn up to build 6 foot tall - 3 foot wide display cases out of wood and plexi. Calculations are that I’ll need 4 of these just for the unbuilt kits I have on hand. Now, I just need to wait for the cash flow to allow me to pick up the supplies…oh, and build more models!
I put the ones that I don’t have room for in my cabinet in those Rubbermaid under the bed storage boxes (no dust!). my girlfriend stores them in Hefty bags and gives them to the garbage man for safekeeping.
I was able to get two glass display cases that were in a store going out of business. There is the bottom plus two shelves. On the two shelves I display 1/32 aircraft and have four planes per shelf. On the bottom is a composite of 1/32 and 1/48. Being lighted it shows everything nice.
