How do you stop decals for slivering?

I have a sheet of decales that seem to fall apart when you touch them, any suggestions.

There is a decal bonder on the market that helps, but you’ll have to trim the decals close as it turns the whole sheet into one big decal. You could possibly scan and print a new decal sheet on your printer with white and clear decal sheets.

Decals must be applied over a gloss texture/sheen. Either gloss coat whole model, or apply gloss locally. Then, when done with decals, if needed for a matt finish, apply a dullcoat. Silvering means finish not smooth enough.

Some folks use future as a gloss coat for decals and it works- I prefer enamels or lacquers.

That’s if you use the spray. There’s also MicroScale Liquid Decal Film, which you can apply by brush over individual decals.

Decal silvering can happen to any type of decal on any surface . Here’s what I do .First - if it’s older decals I overspray with a decal fixing agent . Then I cut them out with the tiny bladed swivel type X-Acto knife .

Then I use warm water and finally MM setting solution . Make sure you get the decal nice and dry and then overcoat with clear gloss or flat Acrylic paint . T.B.

One thing I use to prevent silvering is I apply a bit of Distilled White Vinegar to the surface where the decal will go. This does two things. 1) It will slightly “melt” the decal and allow it to fit into the nooks and crannies of panel lines… 2) It will actually prepare the surface a bit to grab the decal. Testor’s used to sell Decal Set which was the exact same stuff years ago.

Testors and several other vendors still sell decal setting solutions. However, depending on how flat the base paint is, I find most setting solutions still leave decals susceptible to silvering.
