I am ready to step off into the next phase of my diorama and am trying to figure out how to make trees. I am looking at producing hardwoods, no evergreens, late summer/early fall for foliage. Oh yea…lets not forget the scale, 1/48. Dont need a bunch but do need more than one. Any help would be appreciated [:)]
OK, this is probably going to sound REALLY stupid, but I agree with Rudyard Kipling: only God can make a tree… so I let Him do the creating and I adjust for scale…
I like to take pieces of azalea or crepe myrtle with a somewhat straight branch that can be used as a trunk, and look for fairly symmetrical offshoots. I remove any leaves, leaflets, and buds, and attach some model railroading foam foliage with a little white glue to simulate leaves, and I’m done. Since everything is natural, I don’t have to paint to get a realistic result. Hope this helps.

Kipling eh? Think my favorite poem he did is Tommy Boy…Tried to get the wife to cross stitch the first stanza as a Christmas or B’day gift, never happened though sigh…anyway, I will give it a shot, I was also sorting back through previous FSM mags and found what looks like the same technique you are talking about. Thanks.
Roots from woody plants make great trees and even have scale bark. They have nice little branches and some realistic shapings. You can use the foam RR product for leaves. For 1/48th this should look pretty good.
