Allright, I know some of you are experts at this, so time to share the wealth… I’m ready to paint my 500 pounders on my P-47, (1/48) and the color scheme is olive drab with yellow stripes… whats the best way to mask the ordanance,
AND>>>>>>>>>> while your thinking of that… anybody every make there own custom decals???
I need instructions a 7 year old could follow![;)]
Thanks! and Salute!
There was an good article a few in a FineScale a few months ago about putting the bombs in a slow speed drill and just holding the brush where you want to paint while it is spinning. It works and you don’t need to mask.

Hey Texxx!
Bryce mentioned the easiest way to paint the bombs, and I second that. It does work, lotsa fun too. Takes some practice like anything else… LOL
I’ve made my own decals, usually just handpainting on decal film. I also tried (a LONG time ago) the xerox deal for black markings. What exactly did you want to know about homemade decals?
Fade to Black…
Tex, here’s a few suggestions:
- The spinning bomb/paint brush trick already mentioned…
- I saw an article where the writer actually ‘dipped’ the entire point of the bomb into yellow paint so that the whole nose was yellow. Then, he dipped it again in the ‘bomb color’ so cover up the yellow that was on the nose. He didn’t dip as far on the second ‘dip’, so that some of the yellow still showed.
- I’ve been meaning to try this one, but haven’t had an opportunity yet. I have some clear decal film at home. I’m planning on painting a small section of the decal film yellow, then cutting out a ‘strip’ and applying it to the bomb. Should work, but I have not experience to know for sure.

Ya’ll! and Thanks for the paint ideas… as far as the custom decals, I would like to print some noseart that I have scanned onto some clear decal sheets…I’ve heard there is a special spray on seal that goes on after that…All just hear say ideas… I’m really looking for step by step instructions with a component list…
Thanks In Advance!
