How do you create realistic wood decks on ships?

Anyone care to share their ideas about creating realistic wood decking? I’m about to start a couple of projects and I need more info on how to do this.

There was an article called “Painting realistic wood grain” by Lynn Kessler in the Nov. 2003 FSM (p. 52).

Depends on what type of decking you’re after, and what you’re using for your deck, plastic, resin, or real wood.

For plastic and resin decks, if I want teak, I paint the deck with a color called ‘Concrete’ from Pollyscale, then apply wash of burnt umber. Once dry, I apply a light grey pastel over the top…makes for the best aged teak I’ve seen.

On plastic molded decks, I use the following technique.

  1. Spray the deck with flat back, (either floquil or testors), Let dry for 24 hours.
  2. spray over the black with Testors armor sand, let dry 24 hours.
  3. When dry lightly scrape the top of the deck with your #11 or a light rub with fine steel wool. in the tight areas you will need your # 11 blade.

This will bring out the moulded deck grain pettern. Email me direct at

I make my wood decks by spraying Model Master Acyrl Wood.Let it dry over night.Than I use a Zar wiping stain applied with a brush. Color depends how light or dark
I want it. Let set for at least 24 Hrs. spray over it with a flat coat. Than I use a India ink
mixed with alcohol wash to bring out the graining.

I paint my decks using the same method as Big Jake and they always turn out looking great.
