How did this guy get this great tank paintjob?

I understand exactly what he did up until the point of step 3. After he has basically substituted the the wash for a red-black paint mixture and sprayed it into the recesses where the wash would normally flow, he then misted the tank lightly with a desert sand color. The picture basically shows this this as you can clearly see the recesses have been hit with the red-black and the green on the tank looks a bit yellower. Then all of a sudden in the next picture the tank is completely washed out looking.l know he also used Tamiya “buff”, could he have misted the tank with the buff to possibly get this effect?

It appears to me that he really went to town with the dusting effect to the point that much of his earlier work was hidden. He does state something to that effect by saying he wanted a very heavily weathered look to match a photo he had. A bit overdone IMHO, but an excellent job none the less.

I think that he basically dusted the daylights out of it. I lot of builders use that as a technique. It’s easy to overdo, but when done correctly, it can give a great effect. Here’s another article from a regular FSM forum contributor on the basic technique.
