Id rather watch the classic movies like saving private ryan or the patriot, but I think Dunkirk is hands down the best. Nothing else comes close to delivering 2 straight hours of anxiety and fear without ever even seeing the enemy. Especially when you’re talking WW2, blitzkrieg, dive bombers… The no names, lack of dialogue… To me its the only ine that doesn’t feel cheesy in some way. And the spitfire pilots? How bad ass are they
I guess the only thing holding it back in a way is its more a psychological/anxiety of war movie than what we think of as a war movie

Yep, one of my favorites too!
Everyone has put forward great lists. Some I’ve watched many times, others I’ve never heard of and are now on my to do list. The biggest problem I encounter these days is the lack of availability of certain titles. Multiple streaming services, multiple accounts and you still can’t always find what you want. There are days that I miss the local corner video store…..
And that’s why I like to own hard copies of the movies on discs, be it DVD or Blu Ray. Players are quite affordable nowadays. But some titles are harder to find than others.
I don’t know if this is the right forum thread for this, but I just “inherited” a large collection of WWII movies and documentaries that my best friend had. When my best friend passed away, his wife said I could have whatever DVD’s he had. The pictures below are probably only the tip of the iceberg so to speak. Not sure how much more my friend might still have in the hoard mess around his house.
There’s even some sets in these pics that are still shrink wrapped and have never been opened and watched.
I need to go through everything and get it cataloged, take pics of each individual set, and check all the discs for any damages.
Some stuff I might keep for myself. But the vast majority might be given to members in my local model club and/or we’ll have a mini club auction.
Two WWII movies I enjoyed:
Never much cared about “Kelly’s Heroes”. Not really a war movie. Just a bunch of hoodlums who rob bank. Meh.

“Always with the negative waves Moriarity”. 
I would respectfully disagree with your assessment. Yes it’s a bank job, but the central characters are hardly hoodlums. Just a recon platoon, some tankers, and a supply sergeant who go into harms way for themselves and a big payoff. But it’s very much a war movie.

A great naval aviation movie for sure! All those glorious late 70’s full color schemes, along with a handful of new low viz schemes to be seen in the background. Great footage and wonderful music.
