Honda RC211V Group Build

Here it is…The group build you’ve all been waiting for. For some reason I can never get enough of building Tamiya’s RC211V kits, so I thought I’d include some other people in the fun this time. I don’t think we need too many rules for this one. All I’ll say is:

-Any kit in any scale of the RC211V can be made;
-You can use as much aftermarket stuff as you want;

Here is a list of all the participants so far. I’'ll update it with the build information when I get it.

*Pingtang-2003 Rossi RC211V
*joelwideqvist-Camel, Telefonica and Pramac 2003 RC211V’s
*seabee-
*Yamafreak72- 2002 Rossi RC211V
*AuslexusJapan-
*cupcai-
*mitchgixer6-Valencia 2003 RC211V
*re9za- Valencia and Telefonica Gibernau 2003 RC211V
*shroomy-2003 Repsol RC211V

That’s it at the moment, but anyone else can join at any time.

Anyone building katoh-san’s RCV Fortuna?

I know Joel allready built it. “Stunning” is an appropriate word, you can look on his site.

Anyone got any good close-up detail shots of the 2003 RC211V? I’ve got some, but would like some more of the engine and other parts.

Thanks

You lads probably have heaps of reference material, but I’ll post the links that I have at the moment anyway:

2002 RC211V

2003 RC211V

More 2002 RC211V

hope it helps someone.

I haven’t scan all the photo in my collection of close-up detail. How to attach thoose photo in this forum? What’s the appropriate file size to scan?

Right folks you can count me in too!

I’ve got Rossi’s Austin Powers kit waiting to be started. Anyone got some good reference photos for me???

Good to have you in mate. Don’t know of any specific references for the Austin Powers bike, but it was pretty much the same bike as the rest of the season. So the links I added further up the page should be helpful. I think the main difference between those photos and the valencia bike is a new configuration exhaust silencer.

From memory (and in my case that doesn’t count for much…): Two consecutive copies of TMMI had reviews of four of the RC211V’s, two per magazine. I don’t have it, just remember seeing it on their site. Latish issues from this year. I think one has the Camel & Telefonica versions and one the Rossi 03 and the Valencia kit (Austin Powers). Maybe there’ll be some pics there.

I also had a look on the official motogp.com site, there’s a few pics of the bike there. And as pingtang said, it’s the same bike as he used the rest of the year (latter part), so except for the paint-job, reference photo’s will work.

I have the first TMMI mag with the RC211V’s in it (the camel one and telefonica), but unfortunately there are no reference pics in there. Haven’t seen the other mag yet so it might have some reference pics in it.

Now you mention it I remember that issue of the Tamiya mag. Will need to dig it out and have a look.

Did some searching and I found some pics on http://www.bobstart.de/infovox/valencia/index.html

Some on there of other RCV’s as well which could be helpfull.

Merry Christmas to everyone!!!

Hi guys!
I’ll definately go for this one and enter three projects, as follow;
Camel RC211V '03 (Biaggi qualify bike for Dutch GP)
Teléfonica RC211V '03 (Katoh version)
Pramac RC211V (Tamada bike from Italian GP)

I’ve started them off slightly and did some exhaust work yesterday (very tired…) and glued the mufflers together in the wrong way… have to fix that today…

About the Valencia version…except the new exhaust sile that featured already on the factory Repsol bike during later races of the season there is a slight change of the side cowlings and to the front fender compared to the Tamiya kit. The cowlings reaches a bit further back and the fender is also a bit longer. I have some referenses on my site, I’ll post a link.
best regards
Joel

I opened the box on my RC211V today. Those detail-up parts look good, I never like painting those springs, so a pre-painted one is good. Might do some painting today.

Glad to hear that some of you bods have got started on the kits.

I’m off to get the piants and sprays that I need at then end of the week. Noticed in the instructions that Tamiya now have a spray version of X-18 semi gloss black. Do you guys think it’s worth getting hold of this spray instead of the paint? I don’t have an airgun. I also noticed it’s used alot on the Yamaha M-1 kit. Worth spending £8 on???

I might get slaughtered by the pursists here, but I’m never without the semi-gloss black rattle-can spray! All kits have at least one sprue that needs it, so I tend to blast away merrily with two dust coats (whilst still on sprue) and then do touch-ups later by hand.

It just makes it a heck of a lot quicker and easier. Works for me…

I’m with SeaBee here, I like working with TS-29 (semigloss black) and TS-14 (black) cause they make a much more solid coat that’s easy to polish and clear coat.

For reference pictures for the ´02 and ´03 rcv:s you can have a look at my web site. I’ve collected some during my own builds. Some are good others are not…
The actual page is burried deep down at my swedish web so here’s a direct link.

Hello all,

I’ve done three RCVs so far (Telefonica, Repsol, Biaggi/Camel), all '03 versions. I’ll be tackling Rossi’s '02 Repsol for this build. Anything I need to look out for in this version? I saw on one site that the decals can be a pain (don’t want to talk about the problems with the Telefonica’s I had) and they changed to the '03. Also, who has the best C/F decals out there? I’m looking at using 1/20 maybe considering some comments I’ve read on how 1/12 looks on these bikes. Also, awesome reference pics, Joel!

Yamafreak

I have some C/F decals from http://www.scalemotorsport.com/
Very easy to use for a first timer and plenty of it to experiment with. In terms of the scale I would recommend 1/24 for a 1/12 bike. I used 1/12 for my last build (NSR500) and although it looks ok it is definatley a little too big. I posted on here for some thoughts and all the replies pointed towards the 1/24. I’m gonna buy some for my Valencia build. As for the 2002 build I think it should be pretty similar to the 2003 kits you have done allready. I’m the other way round, finished a 2002 and now doing a 2003. Think the actual assembly should be very similar. As for the decals I had a little trouble with the side “Repsol” ones, but that was before I discovered Microsol! I also found the white on this portion of the bike was a little transparent.

Joel

Excellent pics mate. Thanks very much. [:D]

Mitchgixer6- I like using Tamiya’s TS-29 semi-gloss, mostly because I get too lazy to get the airbrush out. It gives just as good a finish as an airbrush anyway, and a lot better than brushing.

Yamafreak- Like mitchgixer6 said, the decals aren’t the greatest in the world. It’s worth spraying some white underneath where the white decal sections on the cowl go. The decals are pretty transparent and show the orange. Also, make sure you don’t spray to thick a clear coat over them. I ruined a set by spraying Tamiya TS-13 clear on too thick (that’s why my last one turned out as a west bike [:)]). The kit builds up exactly the same as the '03 version with different cowl panels and some detail differences.

Either 1/20 or 1/24 scale carbon fibre decals would look fine. I used 1/12 decals on my '02 RC211V and they do look slightly out of scale. Scalemotorsport are the only ones that I’ve used, and they are easy to use. You just might need something a little stronger than microsol to make them conform to curvy surfaces.

Joelwideqvist- Great reference pics mate, Thanks.
