Yikes, today is my birthday (again!)… so I just finalized my mondo order at www.luckymodel.com in celebration. [:D] Huge x-mas sale right now, btw. And trust me, I don’t work for them. Heh.
So I’m turning 33 and realizing that I don’t have much built on my shelves yet. [;)] Probably only 7 or 8 builds that I’m really proud of and have earned their spot, then a bunch from my “return to modeling” which will be relegated to…somewhere (the old bottle rockets and firecrackers death, maybe?) unless I can find a way to work them into a dio or something as “wrecked” vehicles?
I figure with my average life expectancy being around 77, I’ve got 44 years give or take to add to the display (and add more shelves), so I don’t need to despair quite yet.
This probably shouldn’t be one of my “Life Goal” worries…but hey, it’s an addiction, right? [:D]
Remember to consider when calculatating how many models you can finish, that as you become better, you’ll be spending more and more time on each…and although you might not finish 100 models in your lifetime, you can at least be proud of the ones you do complete[;)]
Personally, I don’t think my stash will outlive me, at the rate I build, although it does help that I do a lot of commission work. What I think will probably last till after I’m gone is my Winsor-Newton oil paints…when I purchased them, I was being thrifty and all, and bought the 32 oz tubes because they were a better deal…so now I have a few gallons worth of oil paint, which I doubt I will be able to use…
32 OZ TUBES? Hermes, I hope you build…a LOT. Or you could let Doog work off of your tubes, he would help get rid of it…I think you’ll still have some left over for your inheritance, though. [(-D] Maybe you should start painting models exclusively with oil paints??
I know for me, if I don’t start more time building than I do shopping for my stash, I’m certainly going to outlive it…and have some pretty bare shelves!
Happy B-day Dupes 33 aint old lol whippersnapper i forsee yours shelf being full by the time you get to 40 heh then you’ll begin the process of redoing the ones you think you could have done better on lol it never ends.
HAAAAAAAAAHHAHAHA…“Whippersnapper”. I love it! [(-D]
You may be right about the shelves Biffa. However, I’ve already started re-doing the ones I thought I could have done better on. That Panther is the first one that’s going to go. [}:)]
Age is just a number! Happy birthday dupes! My current stash is at 80 kits and at the rate I build these days I figure I have a 6.7 year supply assuming I acquire no additional kits in that time period of course. [;)]
HBTY, dupes. Just turned 57 myself. You got plenty of time to clear your stash. I’d have to finish one kit every two weeks for 20 years to empty mine just as it sits today - not gonna happen.
Actually, I plan to live to age 95 at which time I’ll be shot by a 20 year old jealous husband . . . . [:-^]
Mmmmm…huge stashes. Always makes me feel semi-normal to hear about other huge stashes. [:D]
WBill, I’ve only been back in modeling for a year now…and I’ve already got a stash like yours (77 I think at last count). I “accidentally” (ahem) bought 2 kits on Ebay while I was on hold today at the office…got some great deals, but I digress. [;)] I’m going to either have to start cranking out more kits or slow down my buying…and we know THAT isn’t going to happen.
Sauron, by my math you’re looking at 500+kits? I can help you get rid of some of the ones that aren’t going to make the cut before your decidedly promising demise. [(-D]
33!? That isn’t old…Yet! LOL! I am in my 40’s and feel 80. I know the feeling about never building the whole stash. But I keep buying. when I pass to the great workshop in the sky, I will pass the stash to my children and their children. Think of the prices they will be able to charge on E-bay for antique kits!!! Keep building, keep buying! Remember: "He who dies with the most kit’s wins!!! Happy Birthday!!!
1 month ago I entered 67 and remember with a touch of envy my 33, feeling like an immortal god of a kind…
My current project is an all metal firing 1/10 scale FlaK 88 and am still in drafting stage for about a year. Your comments brought me down to Earth. I should start immediatelly.
Haha, that’s the kicker. There is no way that you won’t be buying more down the road. At my pace, that would last a lifetime. However, i plan to crank it up when I retire, if I can still see the small pieces.
[party] Happy BD Dupes. Let me say if I knew then, what I know now…[;)]
Ahhh 33. I remember it fondly. Wait til 40 hits you in the face - ouch! It’ll feel something like this … [banghead]
As an old man of 41, I am firmly in the camp of “he who has the most toys when he dies, wins” of course in this case it is “he who has the largest stash…” And for the record, yes, my wife thinks my complusive buying of kits is a “typical male genitalia thing.” I kinda have to agree with her. But then I’ve just gotten my stash up past “kiddie stage” (25 +) so I am feeling kind of manly…
Your young, keep buying more kits - it will either help the rest of us (strong demand means increased supply), or I can snatch them up on evil bay cheap when a new hobby hits your fancy. [:D]
Well I am 41 now with a stash well over 600 (mostly aircraft).
I am well and truly into small scale armour currently with no new aircraft model purchases for a while now as I have been building a small stash of braille scale AFV’s
So I doubt very much that I will build all this stash, so when I pass on, I am to be placed onto the piled up stash and burned Viking style.
Age is such a relative thing. I remember 20 years ago as a young 23 yr old lieutenant, we got a new company commander who turned 33 just after assuming command. I remember thinking he was ancient (most company commanders are around 26-27 years old).
Twenty years later, I look back at 33 fondly as a time when my first born son was born.
happy birthday, dude[party]— I would commit sreious crimes just to be FORTY THREE again–( much less 33)— enjoy your time— ya got P L E N T Y[:D]-- on the subject of ‘the stash’-- —I am not gonna do it— I have about 3 kits in the works and three waiting that i am already bored with-- I know I will never get to them-----I will hedge my bet on new technology-- why build something that was already out of date 10 yrs ago? ( if you knew what I was gonna build next, you would laugh at my sarcasm)---------tread[8D]
