As the title says, this is Hobbycraft’s (AMT molds) P-40F/L. It will be marked, courtesy of Eagle Strike decals as an “F”, flown by 1Lt. Alfred Froning, 86th FS, 79th FG, Italy, 1943.
Aftermarket items include Ultracast wheels, seat, and exaust, Eduard PE and masks, and Eagle Strike decals. The cockpit PE set is for an “E” model, so I will display this now…don’t gimme no SH…guff!!!
I started work on the wings first, closing up the wheelbay on one side with sheet styrene. Then painted and assembled the wings.
Work then moves on to the pit…YEAH!!!
Being an almost comletely different pit from the “E”, only a few of the PE bits were able to be used.
And for the brains of the machine, I used the PE panel, cut off the molded on rudder pedals and scratched new ones from stretched sprue and bits of PE fret for the pedals. Clear parts glue for the instrument faces. The kit supplied gunsight was not much more than just a little lump of plastic, so, using bits of stretched sprue, sheet styrene and aluminum for the mounts, I created my own.
I raised an eyebrow today when I saw this kit in the new squadron flyer. Decent kit, really. One of the best deals in styrene out there.
You are off to a good looking start. You may want to assemble the engine cowl panels to the fuse and blend it all in before you assemble the fuselage. I had problems with these and one of them leaves a serious gap that needs to be filled.
Love the Ultracast seat! Got one myself a few weeks back and love the detail. It’s a standout even among Ultracast’s usual quality. Think the only item of theirs I’ve been more impressed with is the P-38 wheel set.
They don’t just hand these things out, it takes tons of blood, curses, and the most, downright, foul language to have ever spilled from your mouth, before “they” will finally give in and hand it over. Basically, build a Modelcraft 1/48 F-82, and the certificate will be on your doorstep!!!

If you look real close you can appreciate the detail in this pit…Fermis even replicated the pilot dropping his pocket watch onto the floor of the cockpit!!! See it there next to the base of the control column? Wow!
Very, Very Nice. You say this is the old AMT mold. If this is indeed true then I am follwing your WIP with particular interest as I picked up the AMT P-40F a while ago on ebay.It appears to be a rather decent kit with fair detail.
I understand your artistic license as it seems to be that aftermarket parts for the F/L seem rather limited.
