Thanks again, guys!
Geez, kinda wish I hadn’t sold the kit last month…I’m so fickle!

i too like to raise from the dead the old posts.
they are there to help us anyway right?
and why ask the same question on the same model 87 times when the answer is just a quick search away, or some times the old post is never truly finished with pictures on what, so it sometimes serves as a reminder to the originator of the post to maybe show the end result.
Well said, DURR. Glad to see some folks still know how to search. And I was quite pleased to see this old thread of mine!
My end result, however, was to sell it! Whoops!
Not that I thought it was a bad kit, but I went on a stock-reducing binge last month and sold 48 kits…and the Dornier was one of 'em! Sold a lot of aircraft kits…I have too many armor projects going, and had to eighty-six some kits I know I’d never get to anytime soon.
Glad I read more of the thread before replying. I didn’t notice it was an old thread at first. Hobbycraft did release a “retooled” Do-17Z earlier this year. I haven’t seen any reviews of it yet. If they added some interior detail, it might be worth picking up.

Decided to drag up an old corpse. For BoB fans, there “were” two options for 1/48 Do-17Z kits available, the HC and the Classic Airframes (which is now OOB). So what’s a guy to do? Try to find the CA (which is supposedly better) or hammer out the HC (with all it’s flaws)?
The Classic Airframes kit had a real interior. The HC kit isn’t bad on the exterior, but has a cockpit worthy of a 1960s 1/72 scale kit. If I recall correctly the clear parts on the HC kit are pretty bad too.
I have noticed many old CA kits being re-released by Special Hobby. They might release the Do-17 at some point.

I sent an email to Hobby Craft asking if they had considered “retooling” and they said (to paraphrase) that mold was “retired” and in some one else’s court (which I would assume is Special Hobby?) At any rate, I didn’t feel like waiting for who knows how long or paying 3x the price for for a CA kit and found a HC kit on Ebay. I also found a Squadron canopy for it. Will tackle this when my skills/patience improves.
Special Hobby appears to have the CA molds. I don’t know who would have retired HC molds. I doubt it’s SH. It might be Academy or Trumpeter. I know HC has had a relationship with Trumpeter (some HC kits are reboxed Trumpeter kits) and I think they have done some mold swapping with Academy too.
The molds might also be owned by Italeri which has been gobbling up unwanted molds right and left the last few years. They currently own most Testors molds as well as all the ESCI/ERTL molds and many Accurate Miniature molds.
