hobbyboss 1/72 DORA

happy birthday to me. looks like a nice kit. haven’t pulled everything out of the box but the big pieces are individually boxed. molded in tan which is nice instead of gray. am currently working on the hobbyboss 1/72 BR-52 and hasagawa LEOPOLD K-5 rr gun with the hobbyboss k-5 also in the queue.

will probably build a set of kit track to see how it looks and how much time it takes to make it look good but will probably lay my own track. will use the kit rail “clamps” as a guide to make my own, scanned and scaled down and made from styrene or pe; basswood for the ties; and HO (1/87) rails and ballast.

Well! Happy Birthday to you [hbday] Even if it’s not. Impressive list of kits in your queue, both in subject and size. What’s next? A couple of BR-52s to push those RR guns?

Don

working on the locomotive now. i’m at the prime and paint stage. am going to do it black and red. one k-5 will be grey and the other rr gun will be dark yellow and red-brown. just to add some color. dora will be grey. i also have a bunch of 1/35 trumpeter rr stuff in the stash.

birthday is 07dec51. planning on going back to pearl harbor for the 70th anniversary (and my 60th birthday).

will post some pics of the kit in a few dyas. sorry for the tease.

War time German locomotives were painted dark gray, not black and red.

Sounds like you been there before. Man, I was there 3 years ago, and felt like a kid in a candy store. I ate it all up. So surreal to look over the horizion at where the Japanese planes came and launched their attacks. The Arizona was amazing, though brief (grrrrrr) as they pushed us on. I really enjoyed the museums there as well as the sub tour. The Missouri was so cool. The family even enjoyed it. Thank God, I got to accomplish one of my dreams, alas, a somewhat fleeted one.

This is what the dora engines should look like. I’ve never found anything that looks like them in “N” scale so my 1/144 Dora will have to do without them unfortunately.

I was looking at this very kit in a magazine the other day - very impressive.

It’s not the sort of thing I’d build personally as I’m happy with my armour but these BIG guns have always enthralled me. I remember seeing a video of ‘Thor’ firing on Warsaw during the uprising and the size of that thing just blew my mind (and half of Warsaw by the looks of it).

How long is the 1/72 kit overall? I see that here is a 1/35 Dora too - that must be huuuuuge!

Keep us posted - I want some pictures!

“War time German locomotives were painted dark gray, not black and red.”

i know and if i could find a reference to a camoflauge pattern i wouild do that. i’m just tired of gray, panzer gray, uboat grey, us navy gray…

was there for the first time in '01 for the 60th anniversary. just spent 1 1/2 days before going up to kauai for a week. second time wes in '03. won a week near the canal and waikiki. did the arizona, missouri, sub museum, climbed up diamond head, did the derussey shore battery museum, the north shore and down through the punch bowl memorial and cemetary. next trip will probably be 2 days on oahu and a week on maui. will have to see what kind of pre 07dec events they have next year. fortunately i have met danny martinez, the park service historian on a couple of occassions.

i won’t be starting this for a while which was a reason i was hesitant to even post it. i will unbox everything and take pics this week and post them

approximate length is 44" (3’ 8") or 1111mm. it has 1767 parts. not real wide but my base will be wide enough to have some ground next to it for a vehicle or two so as to really show the size. wonder if any aftermarket parts will be coming out for it.

[hbday] and congrats on the score! The DORA is huge in any scale and at 1/72 you will need a lot of paint for sure. [;)]

Wayne, check out those reference pics in the website I mentioned previously…

I’ll bet that masking method using cooked spaghetti would work well there…

Happy Birthday Wayne!

Man I would LOVE to see a WIP on this beast! [:P]
