Hobby Boss 1/48 P-38L Bare Metal Foil WIP

Good news. I just purchased a set of decals from Kits-World. The P-38 is on-hold until the decals arrive from England.

The KitsWorld decals arrived on Saturday. As usual, the carrier film is crystal clear. Great decals.

I didn’t want this plane to look brand new, so I used a Black and Mud wash to dirty up the model.

The landing gear and landing gear doors have parts that are real fragile. Care must be exercised.

Awesome job!

Outstanding…definitely my next p-38. Great subject too.

That’s starting to look every bit the part Johnny. Well done so far. I’d love to BMF a plane one day. You’re making me think I shouldn’t be so chickensh!t about it and just do it. =]

Looking forward to the finish.

Dude,

Just do it. Do it. Do it Do it. It feels so good.

LOL. I do have a P-51D I just started. Some of it will be much shinier than in other places. Perhaps the next one. I’m unsure how I’d go about brightening up what the foil offers. Maybe I’ll do a random experimental one off build of something and leave it in NMF. I think I’d feel good about that.

Are you planning on putting any kind of light wash to some of these panel lines??

Are you using Bar Metal Foil? If so, have you tried using their Chrpme foil? It is much shiner than Matte Aluminum. I am not planning on doing a wash on the panel lines. I think that the foiled panel lines look very realistic when compared to a real plane.

Oh Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo[sn0ps] I made a BIG MISTAKE when estimating the amount of weight needed in the nose to keep the nose down. The model has turned out to be a “tail sitter” [8o|] I think I know what happened. When I estimated the amount of weigh to put into the nose I had the landing gear temporarly installed perpendicular to the wings. In actuality, the landing gear is angeled forward about 30 degrees. When the landing gear was glued in place the center of gravity was moved rearward. Now I need to figure out how to fix this.

JK-first off, this is a great build-very impressive work with the foil-and all of the other aspects of the build too

addIng weigh-is there room behind the IP to insert BBs followed by epoxy shot in via a syringe?

Not enough room befing the instrument panel, but your suggestion sparked an idea.

I cut a hole in the front of the nacelle. It will be covered by the spinner.

Then I poured round fishing weights into the nacelle until the nose dropped down. I added a little bit more weights for the heck of it. Next I squezzed some white craft glue into the nacelle to keep the weights from rattling around. Yikes, that was a close call.

Clamps helped keep the landing gear doors in proper alaignment as the glue cured.

This thread has been very useful, thank-you!

You are very welcome. Glad that I could help.

Looks great.
