hinomaru history

Hi, I am seeking information on the different hinomaru used by the IJN. My internet searches have come up sorely lacking in info. Also, I need to verify the existance of a 1955 Revell offering of the Standard Oil tanker, R.C. Stoner. I am aware that a similar kit exists of the J.L. Hanna (kit H-322:169), but the man for whom I am conducting this search swears that he saw the kit on the shelf in 1955. He served aboard the Stoner during the war so I figure if he said he saw it…he saw it. Any help with these questions is appreciated. Also, if anyone corresponds with Walter Oetzel (a regular contributor) from Northridge, California, I would like to get in touch with him. Thanks so much for the help. Steve.

Hi, Steve!
I’m no IJN expert, but as far as I know, the Imperial Japanese Navy used only 2 types of national flag: the simple red ball on a white background, and the red ball with arms radiating. My impression is that the latter was more common, until the end of the war.

Also, I know the term “hinomaru” (disk of the sun) refers to the simple red ball-on white flag, but there may be another name for the radiating version.
I’ll ask my Japanese modeling buddies and get back to you.

Sorry, I can’t help you at all with your other inquiries!
