Anybody doing anything to simulate the "hillbilly"armor being used in Iraq? From a modeler’s perspective, it seems like a worthy challenge. I’m a novice, so any info about how to simulate rusty Iraqi steel, welded onto a HMMWV or truck would be appreciated.
There were some good photos in a recent issue of Soldier of Fortune, with lots of details. I’d love to see some models.

Hey Tom,
I built this while deployed in Iraq. I used an E collar (think satelite dish dog) for the armor sides. They were rusted with pastel chalk that had been rubbed on sand paper and then painted on with a wide paint brush. I think any styrene sheet plastic would work for this project. I only used the E collar cause I had a ton of them and it was the only large flat sheets of plastic that I had at the time.

I agree with Ron above. Sheet plastic, about 0.020" thickness works great. To weather it, start with flat black paint, then either drybrush some steel color and then shades of brown fro rust, or use pastel chalks for the rusty effect. Finally, seal it well with some dullcote to remove any shinyness.
