Hi swanny. you mentioned that tamiya acrylics have to be thinned with isopropyl alcohol and I have been searching for this product…Is this the one? http://www.mgchemicals.com/products/824.html …Regards Andrew
I think rubbing alcohol is the same thing.
Dan
Rubbing alcohol is anywhere from 40% to 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA). Myself, I use industrial grade alcohol (about more than 99.97% IPA.) I am not sure if the product in that wepage is about the same, because i can’t read any indication of % IPA. I think I’ve tried rubbing alcohol before (when I was just starting out), and it’s not very good. It’s not even good enough for cleaning my tools and brushes. That’s why I switched to industrial grade.
Thanks, Albert. I stand corrected.

Yowzer! That’s a little on the strong side. Isopropyl alcohol is generally considered “Rubbing Alcohol” and is usually used in concentrations from 40% to 70%. Occasionally it can be found on the shelf at 91%. For use with Tamiya paints I suggest the 70% concentration to be the best place to start. What you have found is closer to the “Mythelated Spirits” catagory, it is useful for working with Mr. Surfacer.
I am getting confused here…I have never heard about isopropyl alcohol and don’t know what to look for… Should I search for isopropyl alcohol 40 to 70% IPA? Do you guys have a picture of this product?
Go to the nearest drug store and look for rubbing alcohol. The most common concentration is about 70% but you can also find it in 90%. Either one will work just fine.
It’s available in about any Drug Store. Just ask for it. I don’t use much Tamiya acrylic, so I use their thinner. A little pricey if you use it a lot.
Regards, Rick
Isopropyl alcohol is also found as denatured aclohol.
Thanks a lot guys.
I use 70% isopropyl alcohol to thin Tamiya Acrylics and have obtained excellant results every time.It can be found at most drugstores like Rite-Aid and Walgreens and is inexpensive.
