I’ve been making models for a long time now and I’m enjoying every minute of it!
I mainly specialise in Cars and Bikes , but have been kbown to do the odd tank and figure ( actually , I have a Challenger II, Early version Tiger and a 1/16th scale german soldier from the Stalingrad battle to complete, but shhh… dont tell the wife[:I]
On my bench at the moment are:
Mazda 787B (build diary on the website)
Porsche 917 Monza '71 winner
and another 16 models on the shelf -will it ever end
Good day to all, have fun - Long Live the plastic artists!
Enjoyed your site - had a quick peek there. Know exactly what you mean by the FW14B taking 18 months because of other projects! My 641/2 also on the bench, where it has been for I think more than two years now. No, also straight OTB, nothing special. And I am (only now) about to start spraying the exhausts this eve. The exhausts themselves having taken more than two weeks to get into a sprayable condition! [;)]
On that topic: I got a heck of an eye-opener yesterday afternoon.
Had a look around for ref pics on the exhausts, seeing that I’m about to start painting mine. A completely different colour than I expected them to be! Much darker (towards copperish) at places, where I expected it to be more towards a goldish tinge. Just a quick heads-up…

I used Alclad II to finish mine stainless steel as the base colour over grey primer, then successive coats of pale burnt metal at the bends and exhaust ports, followed by tamiya clear blue and finally, alclad’s jet exhaust where major heating would take place. Best picture I can give of this process is here
Welcome Mark !![#welcome]… I am VERY interested in your Mazda 787 build, I plan on doing one later.I will be sure and book mark your site for more info…Again welcome to the FSM Forum !!
I spent yesterday with an airbrush and a lot of self-imposed artistic freedom on my 641/2 exhausts.
One mistake, but apart from that all went well. To start off: I allready did the base silver. Then added gold to the curved parts. So yesterday I faught the good battle. I do not have access to allclad and al these nice stuff. So I used Tamiya X34 to try and get the reddish tinge, somewhat coppery. Worked for me.
What I did then, was the mistake. I used a little Metalizers “exhaust” for the weld-lines and the top entries into the engin block, which was oversprayed with Tamiya clear blue. I got a very nice enough effect, but feel the exhaust made it a bit too dark. But I will keep it that way, not all that bad. Doesn’t look completely like silkworms, at least! [;)]
So, all in all, the technique is still a few from getting it 100% spot-on, but we’re getting there! Tonight (maybe) for the tedious task of that foil… Mutters to himself and wonder whether he should not much rather mow the lawn…
Onto other stuff: Alex, where did you get the Prost helmet decals?
If I haven’t made mistake, the decals came with Hasegawa’s 1/24 642 kit while Alain was packed in Modeller’s figure in the year around 1992. The 641/2 was a 1/24 kit from Revell recently. So, that’s why Alain has waited for almost 10 years! For the scale of 1/24, I don’t have chance to do the engine and exhaust pipes in the level of details as you did.
You evil man, I did not mow the lawn, your fault… [;)] Did the engin bay’s foil. I now realize why I was looking up to it! But it’s done in rough at least, will trim the foil over the weekend. Reward: no, I’m not mowing the lawn tonight, I’m off on a long MTB ride!
Hey, Mark.
Welcome to the forum - and have a good one while you’re here.
There’s lots of great people here, so make sure that if you have any questions, speak up!!
Cheers, mate.
MTB, yeah, good clean fun! Good (albeit weird) combination of stress-relieving activities! We’ve had a very dry year and the trails are very hard, but had some welcome rain over the weekend. Looking forward to seeing some mud tonight! [;)] Most likely not something foreign to you…
Anyways, if I don’t screw this up, attached a pic of the exhausts. Foil now neat, all is ready for the joining of the engin and the body!
