im not The Sherm but Italeri make a M4A1
it looks the same but i dont know if the M4A2 has the same engine decks?
Italeri’s latest Sherman, the USMC Pacific Sherman (w/wooden armor) is supposed to be an M4A2. It is actually a pretty decent M4A3 with an optional engine deck to make an M4A2. The resident Sherman experts will relay the problems with the rear hull overhang and exhaust. I’m not too sure about the problems of it being a “true” A2.
Okay, I think I’ve got my A’s mixed up, so to speak! What I want to know is, “Does anybody make a Sherman with the cast, as opposed to the welded, hull?” I thought that was an A2, but obviously I’m letting my ignorance show. Guess I’d better get a Sherman book!

M4, M4A2, M4A3 and M4A4 have welded hulls. M4A1 have cast hulls. Then there are the composite hulls (cast forward hull, welded rear hull). Of course then there are the large hatch and small hatch variants of each, and the direct vision slots vs. periscope front slopes, then the front slope degrees change…
Any way, the best M4A1 75mm early (as used in N. Africa and D-Day) is the “Holy Grail” of Sherman kits, the DML M4A1 75mm Early. Italeri does an M4A1 76mm Late (Post War) as pictured in Capt. Caveman’s post.
Great book to get is the Modeler’s Guide to the Sherman by Ampersand Publishing.
Thanks, Rob. I’ll have to try e-bay for that book. It’s been oop for a while. Ampersand’s stuff never seems to stay in print for long. Now if they’d only get the Tiger book out they’ve been promising for the last year and a half or so!!

Wasn’t the M4A1 (76) a HVSS? Captain caveman’s is a VVSS.
The HVSS is a separate upgrade from the A1 or A3 configuration (horizontal volute suspension system, vertical volute suspension system). Shermans started out with various VVSS and the A1s and A3s got HVSS added in later models. The M4A3 became the US’s standard Sherman so they were the ones produced with HVSS during the war. They are also referred to as M4A3E8 or Easy Eights. The Allies started getting the M4A1s and post war use received the HVSS or “E8” upgrades. These are M4A1E8s.

Ok … so you want one like what’s in the picture I take it.
As already cleared up it is the M4A1 (76) W and Italeri does make this in kit form. Change the gun barrel and you have the W.W.II variant.
If you want the M4A2, then Italeri’s Marine kit just doesn’t quite make it. They give you a new engine grill but that’s about all. The rear hull hads to be totally changed and the upper rear hull has to be changed to reflect the proper angle of an M4A2.
Just one more thing to add to the HVSS (Easy-8) question … also available post war on the M4A2.

also i thought i’d just add that those pics were taken down the road from me in kent near where i grew up…i went to this show there in the summer where they did a WICKED re-enactment of the normandy inland battles…real sherms[:D], half-tracks of all shapes and sizes, mocked up tiger[8D], stug III and jagdpanther[8D], and ofcourse more SS[:(!] than you can point a stick at…
for all you guys in the UK or who come here i can’t recommend it enough! it’s held at the hop farm in beltring, near paddock wood, kent every year…(sorry, don’t have link)…

We used to have the M4A1E8 with muzzle brake sitting in front of my company area when I was a little lieutenant in Germany. It had been a West German vehicle that was relegated to hard target status and later saved for display purposes. I always kick myself for not taking photos of it. That and the running M3 halftrack we had for ceremonial purposes. Stupid, stupid, stupid!

Major Rob - Haven’t we all made that mistake once or twice.
- Oh … what do I want a picture of that for, I’ll never build it.
- I can’t waste film on that … I need all my film for the 36 detail shots of the inside of the glove compartment of the M13/40 Carro Armato.
- It’ll be there when I come back.
- It’s just a Sherman … seen one … seen them all.
- There’s one of those in front of every Legion across North America, I’ll get pics when I “need” them.
