Here's what good ref pix'll do for ya! (MBT-70 rear deck: thanks, Jason!)

Ya gotta love good ref pix!
FSM’s own Jason West (JWest 21) did me a great favor recently by taking some great pix of the rear deck of the MBT-70 on display at Aberdeen last month. I had already finished my 1/48 Aurora MBT-70 build, and was just about to dig into the painting phase of the operation when I got the pix from Jason. I had done the best I could on the rear deck with the very sketchy pix I had found before, but Jason’s clear close-ups confirmed what I had suspected from the beginning: I had the whole thing wrong! (Well, Aurora and I had!)
So I carefully stripped the rear deck of primer and all detail, filled Aurora’s original deck “doors” and my incorrectly scribed hatches, and armed with those great pix, I started all over again. I was worried about scribing over my originally scribed lines, but it all worked out.
The results are far from perfect, but I reckon it’s a heck of a lot closer to accurate than it was before!

Here’s the chain of events in plastic and metal:

Pre-ref pix, not much going on here!

Sanding, rescribing, and glueing!

All done! And much more accurate.

So, that’s what some good ref pix’ll do for a build. The moral is, don’t be afraid to trash what you’ve done when you get some good info at the last minute! It was painful to clear the deck after all that work, but I’m glad I did.

Thanks again for those great pix, Jason! [:D]

Looks awesome. It’s great to see a kit like that accurized. I am very impressed.

Great job on the rear deck J-hulk.

Thanks, guys!

Just like the real thing!!![;)] Excellent job. When i look at your finished kit, I can’t believe it is the old Aurora kit and not some new kit with the works in AM

Looks great! and very real!

Great job J-Hulk. Definitely good to see this little puppy finished and ready to go.

I’m off to Shizuoka with this rascal tomorrow!
