this may start WWIII but here goes. what if somehow we devised a way to have an fsm forum competition just for fun.
we limit the # of people that could enter to the first…say 10 or so people to volunteer.
all participants would have to build a certain aircraft…for example, each contestant would build a FW-190. instead of the FW-190 GB it could be called the FW-190 contest.
whoever started the contest could set the parameters. for example
has to be hasegawa FW-190
has to be OOB
has to be 1/48 ect. ect
Each participant would have to be able to post photos of the completed subject.[D)] the photos would have to include the cockpit details, underside, topside, left, and right side and a couple of freelance pics to try and sway the crowd.
we could set a finish date and on the finish date we could post our finished subjects in a poll type thread and let the masses judge the competition. the first contestant to 40 votes wins, or something like that.
would that be fun? what do you think? later.
ps. feel free to add to these pitiful rules that i’ve come up with. thanks.
the idea needs to evolve, so I might suggest something. Everyone builds models, whether in group builds or not, and send there pics to fsm & the forum here. Maybe we should ask for a separate forum titled “Model of the Month” (or similar) and people submit one photo (cos if you send a photo of every detail, it would take too long to download or view all the photos).
**I deleted a little section on przies (aka bragging rights), and bit’s about the time involved in setting up a polling post, and restricting the number of players (i was i bit harsh in my tone so I do apologise). So if you’re wondering where it is - it aint here anymore [:)]
we have modellers of all different experiences - professionals to first-timers; young kids to old-timers; people with airbrushes and people who dont; people who use filler and people who dont; etc;etc; etc. And if we base our votes on professional presentation (aka - looks) who do you think is going to poll the most votes?
Maybe a “similar idea” would work - but from simple ideas, come exciting workable solutions (don’t they!)
well luke its apparent you dont like the idea because you went out of your way to make this into a scary monster… Rules to contestents outside the u.s.??? Bro, I think you went loco on that. The prize here is among your fellow modellers, show off rights, bragging right. Man this whole section of this forums gets 40k plus on it. Look for yourself.
So next time if ya dont like it just say so instead of putting all the energy into a kinda screwed response ya gave to this.
Prizes… that kinda build would have numbers in the high 10’s (70-90), and to be voted as the best by your peers, now thats an accomplishment. Have ya ever seem swanny’s builds??? This place is full of the big boys, I think it is an awesome idea and would probably see alotta action once a few of those builds are finishing up.

I’ve seen Swanny’s stuff and it’s outstanding, along with other guys - somw people are really professional, and other just modelling for fun. But if a professional modeller pits against a young bloke who’se gonna win?
The idea could work, but it needs to evolve? I think a FSM member voting model competition would work!
First: good idea, may need alot of polishing, but good idea.
Second: Luke good answer, a simple “I don’t agree” would leave people thinking, “Why”.
Your answer pointed out the weak points of this idea.

Maybe but you had a real good point in the amount of time they have…not to feasable so how about this. Ok by the original post, the first 10 builders are in. Then the person with the 11th WRITEN POST should become head judge, and then the next 4 actual posters on the thread are his lackies ;), creating a random panel of 5 for the judging. after that everyone will have to go on the honor system and do as little posting there as possible to allow the 10 contestents and 5 judges do their jobs. How does this initial idea tickle ya??

Salty I like the idea…but I think we may need to widen the scope a bit…maybe to 25 or so modelers… I think the worse thing we could do is to leave someone out…and if a youngin (like myself) wants to pit against the big boys (Pix, and Swanny) then they should have every opportunity to do so…also the different time zones might screw the people who really want to get involved out of it…
Another idea would be to just let the top hitters be the ones who set up like quarterly contests…ie theme, model, scale, etc…they won’t judge, or enter maybe, just pick the subjects…everyone else would go to town to try and eminate the heavy hitters…

There is just one problem, Luke said something about it in his first post I think. Time zones. I live in europe, and I am 7 hours ahead of forum time, that would make it very difficult for me to ever become one of the first 10 to post in such a topic.

actually had thought of something similar to this but not as detailed. tis a good idea and could work. discussion is needed though.
the thought i would be concerned with -judging, if the members judge just based upon looks one or two members will consistantly be on top. this is not to say others dont have good builds but there are a few that are masters of this and make it as art.
it is a good idea and could be alot of fun. limiting the entries, specifying the subject, judging the finished build, and rewarding the winner are good selling points.
Break it down to cover all ages, much the same way that they judge models entered at expo’s and as Luke said some use filler, airbrushes, some don’t, some hand paint and use rattle cans, some don’t.
I have a model here to paint for a nieghbours 14 year old girl, it’s the first aircraft model she had ever built, [a 48 scale Typhoon Ib]. I’ve just gotta paint it for her.
ok, i can see where letting the forum members poll who wins could get out of hand. i didnt think that the person who actually built the model could vote himself to victory so that idea may not work.
i dont agree with limiting the photo to just one, that would be boring. however, the fellow who starts the contests could make the parameters and set the challanges for any kind of contest. i mean, you could have a contest where it has to be OOB and judging will begin in 48 hours!! anything goes fellows, i think the contests will be so diverse in rules (like GB) that the big dogs want have time to enter everything.
to keep the heavy hitters from taking the cake everytime, the winner of the contest couldn’t be a part of the next or something. plus, just like group builds, there will be several going on at once probably.
keep in mind, this is just for the fun of it guys. i’m not trying to start WWIII here.
another challenge would be finding a non biased judging system. everybody’s seen pix’s, swanny’s, and easyco’s (among others on here too) wonderful builds and the judge would have to be non biased if they were a part of the contest.
i think this could be interesting if we keep it in the perspective of having fun. i’m glad to see these posts as it seems like it may get off the ground if we can put our heads together and come up with some sensible guidelines.
Competition can bring out the best & the worst in some folks. Might work, but you need very well defined rules and judging criteria. Also, since it relies on web pics, you eliminate anyone without a digital camera and might give an advantage to modelers with superior photography skill. Personally, I wouldn’t compete but if you get this off the ground I’ll follow the thread with great interest. Good luck.
This sounds like a good idea, shure it needs to be tought out more and tweeked a bit but I would definatly like to be able to participate in this. It could be fun, plus it would give me and other people a chance to compeat against builders like swanny. so count me in when it is started. I got a couple tricks up my sleeves that I would like to try out before I head to the IPMS cometion in september. Plus this could also let people compare there work with true profesional builders, which is really why I think this is a good idea in the first place.
