im very new to modeling and i have purchased a revell a-10 warthog for my first project. any pointers appriciated… newb questions!

I like to use a primer. Nothing fancy, people have had great success with rattlecan primer from Wal-Mart. I prefer the Plasi-cote brand. If you are using acrylics I suggest you use a primer.

You can. If you use something like Testors Modelmaster enamels. Primer helps the paint adhere to the surface. It also helps you find flaws & seams as well as filling in minor surface irregularities.
“do i assemble it before painting?”
Yes. Assemble as much as possible into sub-assemblies. Try to keep paint off the areas which are to be glued. I recommend using liquid cement. Testors brand works great for me. You can use crazy glue for things that are going to be added later like landing gear & other small parts. Some small parts you might want to paint on the sprue. If this is your first kit ever you might not what to paint it. Just put it together to familiarize yourself with the process.
Try to finish the kit. You will learn something no matter how poorly you think it turns out. If you stick with it and keep modeling in a year for now you’ll be surprised at how much you learned.
