My 4 kids, ages 7,5, and 3 (twin boys) love to watch me work on my models. I was thinking for X-mas getting them each a Snap-To model. What should i get for them? ANy ideas
Maybe get a variety- cars and planes, tanks if they make them. See if they have an interest in one type over the other by letting them sample several. Maybe see if their was an age appropriate book tie-in to encourage reading?
My son (he’s 17) started building planes with me, then bought a 69 Mustang, and discovered he loved building cars instead. (Bonus for me 'cause I took over his small aircraft stash… [;)])
Before you give them a snap-tite, getone for yourself and build it. My experience at make-n-takes has shown that a good many snapp-tites are more frustrating than what we big boys build. Cars seem to be a bit easier than aircraft, as a rule. The 7 year old would certainly be able to handle a siomple 1/72 glue a/c with some help from dad. By the time I was 10, I had built one of Renwal’s NS George Washingtons, a sub with a full interior and drop down hull to show it off, including a firing Ploaris missile and tiny little crew figures. The walls even had little raised detail pinups. WOO-HOO!
Seems like Trumpeter has a new line of 1/72 scale easy-build aircraft. Don’t know about armor or other stuff.

My son is 4 and he enjoys watching and helping put his cars and planes together. With in a hour of going together the car’s are missing tires and the plane’s have no wings

Thats funny cause my 6 year old daughter does the same thing, only she will paint them and then is happy to put them up for display and doesn’t bother them. I have had a couple that I goofed up and gave to my nephew, and he destroyed them in an hour or so. I got him a Blue Angels snap tite and he broke it in a few minutes… boys, I swear [;)]
I just want to see the paint schemes the girls come up with. Ooh look a purple/pink panzer. That’ll blend.
Boy do I agree!
The new snap kits are junk. I switched to having my kids build Tamiya tanks and planes. They go together so well and are not much more expensive then the Revellogram junk when I take advantage of the 50% off sales at Hobby Lobby or find some grab bag deal on the internet.

I don’t know. Something about having a 3 year old playing with a Tamiya[:O] That’s why i want to get them some junk snapto for their first ones. I can just see my one boy glueing his sisters hair [xx(]
I agree that some snap-tite’s aren’t that tite! If you want airplanes, I just read some reviews regarding the new HobbyBoss 1/72 planes that seems very well made and easy to put together - and they mostly snap together, with water slide decals.
I think a good, managable project for them would be Monograms new line of 48th scale Tiger and M-48 Patton tanks.
They actually build up pretty well and look good. And there cheap.
I did the Patton and put it on a display board with a snow scene.
I think it turned out pretty well for the money.

What do they like? Planes, cars, tanks or ships or even Gundam/ SciFi. YOU have to know that first, then you can find a model. Snap tite cars I don’t know much about But Airplanes, The old Monogram F-4 and F-14 Where pretty good. My youngest built the F-4, though I did help, when he was about 7, and I helped with the paint. He then went to Gundam Models. My oldest Skipped Snaptight went straight to “Regular” models and Gundam. These are some of MY recomentations:
A/C Monogram F-4 OR F-14 There was also an OH-58/jet ranger Helio
Armor All I can remember was a monogram Tiger and Think there was a Sherman. If they like tanks it is a tank and comes looking like a tank!!!
Autos Monogaram did a CJ-7 Jeep that was good and I know there are a lot of car snap tites that are pretty good.
Ships I dodn’t remember But there are some fairly easy ship/boat models that you won’t be out a lot of cash, some Lindberg rereleases and such.
Hope this Helps, Good Hunting, G.W.
