Help with prop tips!!!

im wanting to branch out alittle and make a couple of ww2 allied AC. trouble is i cannot get the yellow prop tips to come out at all. im really stuck and would appreciate any help.

thanks SAR

Remember the rule light to dark. Paint the prop white, then paint the tips yellow. Wait until it dries, then mask and apply the black.

I will sometimes use my knife to press in a demarcation line between the black and yellow. I will paint the blade black (or specified color) then dip the tip to the demarcation line dab away the access. Repeat as necessary to achieve coverage. I little touch up with a polishing stick to ease the relief between the two and make it appear uniform and smooth.

Others will chime in with their preferred methods.

i appreciate your quick reply, so far im doing the same things as you,but when i mask i allways get either mismatched lines (ft/back) or paint seepage.[banghead]

I paint the props first, then mask them and paint the tips white. When it is dry, i paint them yellow. When the front is dry, I mask the backs and follow the same procedure. I use Scotch Magic tape. Press the tape down firmly and you should get any seepage. I have never had that problem.

[tup] thanks gordon sounds like it would work pretty good

I use a similar masking technique, but instead of trying to match up two separate pieces of tape I use one piece folded over. I take a slightly oversize piece of tape, gently fold it over and make sure that the edges line up exactly and leave a little loop to slide the blade into.

Usually I mask and paint the tip white then yellow, then mask the painted tip and paint the blades dark gray. Works well for me! [tup]

HTH!

Airbrush the tips flat yellow then cut thin strips of tape to cover the tips and then airbrush flat black.Easy!(This applies to allied aircraft of course)!

cool , thanks guys.[:)] i have definately come to the right place for help. as soon as i get back to my bench ill put your techs. to good use.

Daywalker, you make that look way tooo easy. Then when i try it, it looks like a 4 year old with sticky, sweaty fingers got into the paints lol.

Here is an even easier method that I’ve been using for years…paint the prop blades whatever colour needed, gloss coat then cut small squares of yellow decal and apply…Front side only. Then use 400 grit sand paper and using light strokes perpendicular to the blade and lightly remove the excess when dry. Then clear coat as necessary.

The back side of the blades of a single engine aircraft were normally flat black without the yellow tips…to avoid causing vertigo at low power settings.

allycat that is a total winner[8D]

This is what I do, works every time!! I use Tamiya tape, tho. Just be careful with the white, spray it on SLOWLY for coverage over the black… And when done with the tips, I clear the props with with Future, apply the prop decals, and clear them again to make the decal and painted tip edges disappear. Then a coat of semi-gloss, and weathering over that… Maybe 5 or 6 masking and paint steps for each prop blade, but they look nice when they are done…

by paintng light coats of white you get rid of the prob of paint ridges?it seems this is a huge prob for me when i do this tech.

Yes, just mist the white on with your airbrush. Don’t try to make it white in one pass, it will never look good… If you don’t spend about 10 minutes painting the white for your prop tips (or anything else where white goes over dark) you did it too fast… It should go on almost dry, if it leaks under the tape, its going on too wet…

excellent, ill rember that when doing any painting.[tup]

Barney,

I never really thought of that. I guess the prop tips were/are really only important for the ground crew working in front of the aircraft. That constant yellow/red/white/whatever color circular blur seems like it would have been a huge distraction for the pilot . Very interesting perspective my friend[tup]
