Help with details on a late Tiger, s.SS Panzer-Abteilung 101, June 1944

I am going to be starting a build on a late Tiger and want to double check all the details to make sure I don’t miss anything. I will be using a Dragon Late Production kit (3 in 1), kit #6253, the one with all the PE with it. I will be building this out of the box, plus some minor adjustments. I am building a specific tank, namely one of the Tigers issued to s.SS PzAbt. 101 in April 1944. There are several good photos of these tanks heading to the Normandy front in June of 1944 (Wittman’s company included). So far, what I have been able to deduce is this:

    1. Fgst. Nr. 250825
  1. no external gun travel lock
  2. reshaped rear tow hook bases
  3. 20-ton jack
  4. steel-wheeled
  5. turret roof increased to 40mm thickness
  6. new loaders hatch
  7. monocular gun sight
  8. close defense weapon installed
  9. turret ring guard
  10. no drain slits in commander’s cupola
  11. smaller diameter idler wheels

If anyone knows of anything I am missing, or if anyone has built a similar Tiger, any insight would be appreciated. [:)]

Be careful not to get too hung up on all of the specifics you listed. Wittman’s unit had a mixture of mid (rubber tyres, etc.) and late type Tigers (although all had zimm and the late cupola). There are an unusually large number of pics of specific tanks from s.SS PzAbt. 101 in Normandy. I’d pick a specific picture(s) and then model the specific features that are seen on that one tank.

In addition, the three companies that made up the Abt. all had slightly different marking practices. Wittman’s company was the 2nd. I modeled a tank from it last year:

Fgst. Nr. 250825 is from 3rd kompany 505, not 501…
