I am working on the tamyia AAV7A1 and would like to add the EAAK to this kit. from what I can gather only three kits are available for EAAK (trumpeter/minihobby, hobby fan, and A.E.F) which one of these is the best one on the market? also is there any onther extras that I should consider buying?
I have the KIRIN EAAK set, working on Tamiya’s AAV w/UGWS right now. The KIRIN set is based on the early test sets of EAAK, so is taking a little re-working. Nothing major, just clean up here and there - the kit has round openings for accessing various parts of the AAV, where as the current EAAK has all squared openings. Also the mounting of the “gypsy” racks are too long, and lack the central bracing “field modification” found on nearly every set currently fielded. As far as the AAV models themselves go, I wouldn’t bother with anything but the Tamiya kit. I’ve put a couple of the Trumpeter/Minihobby AAV’s together, they seem to be nothing more than simplified copies of the Tamiya one with far more filling required. I will definately be picking up a kit or two of that interior when it comes out!
A “straight leg” (depicted in current kits) with EAAK removed sometime after its last repaint, Camp Pendleton Ca A RAM/RS AAV (Bradley suspension - currently fielded) with EAAK, Fallujah Iraq
Definitely agree that the Tamiya AAV7-A1 with UGWS is the best of the pack. The Trumpteer EAAK is not bad looking though. It also has the correct gypsy racks on the same sprues as the EAAK. The Trumpeter/Mini Hobby hull parts suck though. They are poor copies of the Tamiya kit that has been modified to accept motorization. Because of this, the hull angles and shape of the lower hull are all out of wack.
Check out this review and comparison by Vodnik. It also includes shots and a write up of the Trump/Mini Hobby EAAK parts on the Tamiya hull, and links to his reviews of the original Tamiya LVTP7-A1and AAV7-A1 w/ UGWS, and Academy’s LVTP7. http://www.vodnik.net/pages/amtracs/aavp7a1wEAAK.htm
