I’ve been building aircraft and armour for a while now but would like to place some of my creations in a diorama.I bought some Tamiya figures but was wondering the best way to go about building and painting them?I think the hardest part would be painting the faces so they look lifelike and not just lumps of plastic.

One thing about the Tamiya figures is that the faces have very poor detail. If I do choose to use a kit figure I always end up replacing the head and hands with ones from Warriors or Verlinden. Good luck with the figures.

Paint first and then Build is my suggestion. After they are build do touch up work and use a generous ammount of paint at like where the arms to the body and the waist connects to the body.
I gave advice on flesh painting in a post reply called “painting figures”. The technique is great for a beginner because it’s hard to screw up. I used it on a figure I fussed over for 2 yrs trying different techs. til I came up with this one. Good luck.
Use a small flat brush to color the flesh. Use a very small round brush or 000 to put some shades or small highlights. Exercise patience and delicateness when using the small pointed round brush. Don’t forget to study the skintones of your subject.
I have found that taking long breaks during figure construction can hurt your consistency. You can forget paint colors and brushes that you were using etc…
Try to keep going on the same project until completion, short of that, write down the paint colors that you used on each figure. Gel type super glue also works well to fill in the gaps that occur at the joints on figures in this scale…don’t give up.
As for me, I would assembled all the body part and airbrush the flesh colour first. Once dried, I will apply MASKOL over the flesh colour so that I can airbrush the uniform. All the other items are best painted while they are still on the tree. As for the figure, I usually airbrush a tamiya clear before I start painting the belts, shoes and so on. Once the black wash is done, only then I would removed the MASKOL so that I can began highlighting the face or start painting the eyes using a sharp tooth pick.
