HELP!! What did I do wrong???

Guys, I need help…it is ruined…[:(]

It was my first atempt to create the chiped paint effect with hair spray and it went all wrong. So I painted this Panzer II in German Gray (Tamiya) and let it dry overnight. Then I sprayed hairspray on it and let it dry for couple of hours. Then painted two leyers of dark yellow and let it dry for about 45min in front of a fan. Then dipped a stiff toothbrush into warm water and started brushing and…the whole thing turned into a frothy dark yelow mess[censored] [banghead].

The whole thing looks soo bad I don’t even want to put a photo. The dark yellow did come of here and there but it just looks so bad. What did I do wrong? Can the model be saved? Should I try re-painting it again with gray, spray and yellow? Wan’t it be too many leyers…What to do?

Thanks

If the dark yellow was Tamiya also, it wasn’t fully cured, and when you started scrubbing with the water it started removing / thinning the not yet cured paint.

Hmmm, makes sense. So should I leave the dark yellow, say, overnight to dry?

Although Tamiya paint drys to the touch in around 15 minutes, I would let it dry for at least a FULL 24 hr’s or longer before doing that.

I’d use a coat of future before the hairspray too just to make sure you have a strong base. if you brush through that you’ve done well

Wouldn’t it be better if the Doog answers this question?

Having a barrier seal between your base coat and the coat you want to chip/remove using the hairspray method is what I would recommend. If you use Future, let it cure for a full 24 hours before applying the hairspray.

Why? are none of the rest of us good enough to answer the question? (no offense to Mr. Doog intended)

Naw it is just that Doog is the Grand Master Jedi of the hairspray technique. He even did a tutorial for it as well.

In addtion to the paint perhaps not being cured, the technique works best when removing thinner layers of paint. Two layer is probably too much.

Also, adding a protective layer (Future) between your base color and the subsequent hairspray/paint is a good rule to follow.

As for the foaming mess, keep working at it as this should clean-up with a little extra water and gentle washing.

Rick

There have been quite a few posted all over the place. Having said that, where is the one the doog wrote, I haven’t had much time to surf the site in a while now.

Zoran,

Doog got it published in Finescale so he had to take it off the forum.
