I figured I would ask you automotive guys this question : How can I remove chrome plating from plastic parts with out sanding ? In other words, is there a secret chemical that won’t harm plastic ? [;)]

just soak the parts in normal bleach
depending on the manufacturer of the kit it normally comes off in mere seconds. AMT kits however take a while longer

Westley’s “Bleach White” or Castrol “Super Clean” always works well for me. Make sure to wear rubber gloves with whatever you use, this stuff is pretty harsh on skin, and rinse the parts in clean water after removing the chrome.

Depending on your objective, it may not be necessary to remove chrome. If you are intending to paint the parts, you can prime over it (most chrome in plastic kits is actually aluminum). I and many others have primed, painted black, and then alclad chromed parts, or just painted a non-metallic finish.
Brake fluid will work as well and Easy Off oven cleaner.
Windex will do it, too, with an overnight (or two) soak.
