I’ve seen some wonderfull headlights done on this forum without resorting to after market bits and pieces

Are we talking the whole headlight or just the glass?
The way I do lenses are One: Aluminium Foil into the bowl then…
Two: Drop of Future into the headlamp bowl on top of the foil
Maybe the car forum might be a better place for tips on this!!
I think I know what you are referring to. Some manufacturers do not include clear lens for the headlights of their models. What I do is paint the inside of the lights with titanium silver which in my opinion is closer to the sliver of the real headlights, I then, using my puncher cut lenses from clear plastic which I then install in front of the headlights using clear paint. The punchers I have has a variety of hole diameters which luckily matches the headlights. I do this after all the painting of the model is done.
Now that’s a better idea!

One article described heating the end of a clear sprue shaped to a convex form and then press it against fine brass wire mesh to imprint the headlights texture into it. Cut to size, sand smooth, then coat with Future and install! Wet Future is like a adhesive and will hold well once dry.
[I]Clear sprue is brittle yet it can be turned in a variable speed drill to sand to size. I have made 1/35 scale sights using this technique. Shape the ends convex for the light to intensify when looking through it.
My thanks to every one for your helpfull replies, these are taking me in the right direction; altho’ the method I had in mind was to paint the lense silver and then perhaps build up with gloss cote or future!
I’m sure I have seen it done, but not sure how. I have tried a search on this forum and in techniques with no luck.

I know you wanted to avoid AM parts… Normally, I abhor after-market parts, but the MV Products model railroad headlight lense are so cheap that it’s really easier to buy a set of those than to do all that work for a couple headlights. Just hollow out the headlight bezels with your medium round steel cutter bit in the Dremel (or use a drill-bit) and apply some silver, then a drop of adhesive to hold the lense in place… Find 'em at the LHS with the model RR parts…
