i will have to wait until i get home to check my Sdkfz 251 book and see what the differences are.
but i should have something tonight or tomorrow.
providing the book covers that variant in some detail.
Speaking just from what I remember having read and heard there wasn’t much difference. Basically they would stack up the ammo on the floor. Might remove the rear bench seats. I asked about the same question a while back about a 251 AT gun tow rig and how they would load the ammo, most everyone agreed that the cases of shells would be just stacked in the back.
I am have no doubt that Wildwilliam will turn up something… You are in good hands in this community.

[#welcome] to the forums MEBM. I can’t find any information on how they stored it, but found out it towed the 105 mm FH and later the pak 38 and Pak40. It carried the gun’s crew and a small ammount of ammo.

Here is some info I found on the web. My Squadron book is buried so can’t check that.
Several 251’s are photographed carrying ammunition. There is no official record on it after 1943. Tank-units on the eastern front are the most seen user. For easier loading and handling seats were probably removed.
Weight 8.75 tons / Crew : 7 / Armament One 7.92mm MG34 with 1,100 rounds of ammo. Ammunition carrier and tractor for the 75mm lelG18.This vehicle was replaced by the Sd Kfz 251/9 with its self-propelled 75mm gun in 1942.120 rounds of ammunition were carried.

A book that I know some of the guys on the forum have, called Encyclopedia of German armour or something, has lots of picks of the innards of many 250/251 variations. Perhaps that might show you what you want.

The New vangaurd book is no help. All I can find out for sure is that they existed, based on Ausf. A, B, C, and D vehicles. Production appears to have ended in 1943 but the existing ones were used through the end of the war.
The large water tank over the transmission in the Tamiya kit was only used in the 251/8 ambulance.

All of them, transport for the Panzergrenadiers (armoured infantry). The SS usually had more that the Heer though.
Infantry divisions (Mot) also had them.
