Help me remember!

In about 1963, the National Guard in my home town, Pontiac, Illinois, had five tanks parked behind the Armory. Several of us kids spent most of the summer climbing on and in these tanks. The hatches were open and we were able to turn on the radios and at one point I pushed a button and the started growled. At any rate, I was in the hobby store today and saw two kits by Tamiya that were possible replicas of thses tanks. One was a Patton and one was a Pershing. I think the Pershing was it but could use the wisdom of the experts in this group as I am have not yet built armor.

Any help you could offer would be appreciated.

I dont think the National Guard would have been using M26 Pershings in 1963
there might have been the M46 or M47 both are based on the M26 but are upgraded

No, it the 1960s they would have been variants of the M48s, most likely the M48A1. Most of the Active Army had M60s by the 1960s, except for forces in Vietnam which used the M48 (no great tank on tank threat). The M48s were relegated to the National Guard, and some units maintained the M48A5 tank into the 1990s.
