Help identifying old TBD Devastator from 1977

Hello, I need help trying to identify a model kit that my Grandfather and I built back in 1977. It is a TBD Devastator kit and I don’t remember the kit manufacturer. My grandfather has since passed away and I would like to buy this kit and build it if I can identify it. From what I can tell from the picture is I put the decals on backwards but that’s besides the point. There is a small antenna or radar behind canopy as you can see from the picture. Also I don’t remember if we painted it yellow and blue or if the plastic with molded in yellow and blue. Please help. Thank you very much.

About the only two that come to mind would be the Monogram kit that came out about that time or it might be a Lindberg kit. I think they had one out at one time, but don’t quote me on that.

The Monogram kit was pictured as a silver ship with the red, white, and blue tail but it could have had extra markings. I got one when they first came out but that was a long time ago and I haven’t seen many since then.

You’re in luck. That’s a Monogram/Revell 1/48 scale Devastator kit. They are readily available at hobby shops, online hobby shops or even ebay. There are several locations in these forums where people have built this kit. Just recently one of our members built a beautiful version of the kit. It may not be the color scheme you looking at but the craftsmanship is worth seeing. Hopefully some of the other guys will share some of their pictures of their Devastators. Hopefully this link will open for you: Rick

Yep, it’s the Monogram kit–no one else produced that subject in 1/48, then or since–and as noted, it’s still available.

You can find it on the retail market, or also on the second-hand market (eg, eBay, or at shows and flea markets). There were several boxings over the years, from the original “white box” with a photo of the finished model on the cover, to later boxings with a painted illustration. I only mention the multiple boxings so I can suggest that if you’re willing to wait and buy it second-hand, you can track down and find the boxing that included a Detail and Scale booklet on US Navy bombers and torpedo planes, by Bert Kinzey. Revell/Monogram commissioned a 2-volume set, the first volume on fighters, and the second on bombers and torpedo planes, and packaged them in kits at the time. They have some nice interior shots in color in them.

It’s a great kit. Out of the box, you can build a nice-looking model of the Devastator, or you can go nuts and super-detail it. There’s an ongoing thread here in the Aircraft forum tracking a current in-progress build.

I hope you get a kit soon, you’ll enjoy it, and it’s a great way to remember your grandfather.

Best regards,

Brad
