Cheers all - I am planning on a build centered on this picture:
All the information I have (from the caption of the pic), is of a “Panther A command tank that has seen extensive action”, either Ardennes or north/east France. I like the fact that the the commander is looking backwards, almost like looking for P-51s and/or Sherman nipping at his heels…
Has anyone seen this pic before, or has the book/publication where it came from? I found the pic in the internet.

The photo can be found on page 28 of Panzers in Normandy, Then and Now. It is an early Ausf A as evident by the horizontal jack placement and single exhausts without the air intake pipes. No unit or location is given.
Some sources cite it as a tank from the 9th SS Division in Normandy…

I haven’t seen that exact photo in a book, but in “D-Day Tank Battles” there is a photo of a similar vehicle with the same exhaust and tool arrangement and the same odd storage racks on the rear deck. The ref cites the vehicle as being from Panzer Lehr. The vehicle in my ref is knocked out and badly burned so there are no markings to be seen. The caption also states the vehicle was knocked out during the pre-Cobra bombardment. Like pretty much any situation, I guess you’ve got to evaluate your sources and decide which to trust.
